Optimism and Innovation at IT’s Technology Day 2009

The second annual Technology Day conference was held on April 17th in the John E. Reeve’s Conference Center here at FIT.  This year’s the theme was "Trend Spotting" and focused on FIT’s diverse and unique use of technology in all the disciplines.  The conference provided teaching professionals with the most up-to-date technology, tools, trends and strategies for the classroom.

Twelve exhibitors and eighteen presentations made for a jam-packed day of powerful learning experiences.  Exhibitors in attendance included: Adobe, Apple, Dell, Gerber, Lectra, Microsoft, Optitex, Pearson, Presidium and Stoll.  Presentations, workshops, and a panel were all given by our own FIT faculty as well as guest lectures by Open Text, Acrobat, Optitex, Lectra, and My Virtual Model.

The words “Optimism” and “Innovation” were at the core of Anthony Salcito’s guest presentation, in the opening segment of Technology Day 2009. General Manager of Education at Microsoft, US. , Mr. Salcito moved the audience through an arena of new technologies we are sure to see in the near future.  The sensation of the morning was when Microsoft exhibited and demonstrated a device called Surface.  This 30” diagonal multi-touch display table is a true revolutionary advancement in the traditional user interface.  Tech Day attendees were among the first to witness this and many other new innovative technologies that Microsoft has developed in recent years.

FIT faculty hosted sessions including topics in Angel Learning, Adobe Lightroom, simulation based learning, Garage Band, and WebPDM.  The TDT was delighted to have Dean Steven Zucker present on Smarthistory.org, a free multi-media web-book/substitute for the traditional art history textbook, of which Dean Zucker is co-founder and managing editor.  Also presenting was Elaine Maldanado, Director of Faculty Development, presenting on the CET’s online community of teaching, Adjunct Advocate.  Jeffrey Riman mediated a panel of three FIT faculty on course strategies with Angel Learning.  Ann Denton from Textile Development and Marketing gave a behind the scenes tour of FIT’s Knit Lab and gave a lecture on developing knit Fabrics on Stoll's M1 CAD system.

Lunch time was no respite from learning when Lester Ray, Market Development Executive from Apple Inc. spoke to participants about advancements in digital environments for higher education.  He asked the audience to consider specific ways of how they keep up with emergent technology and discussed possible strategies for faculty.

This year Tech Day also had the opportunity to host Trading Places, for its third occasion since its conception by Melanie Reim, Assistant Professor, School of Art and Design Chair, Illustration, School of Graduate Studies.  In Trading Places, the tables were turned on learning as FIT’s Art and Design students showed Tech Day a thing or two about technology.  Delivered by our future industry leaders, students demonstrated concepts in 3DS Max 2009, Sonic Foundry Acid and other visual arts applications.

Recently, the Technology Development Team (TDT) surveyed the all participants of the conference and asked them to, “share any specific highlights of the conference, what you enjoyed most?” These are just some of the many responses the TDT received:

I most enjoyed  “…where students had tables set up showing off flash, 3DS Max, Dell laptops, Adobe software, the cool 3D thing with the two camera set up, 3D modeling program…”

I most enjoyed, “Carmita Sanchez Fong, how to strategize, such as using table to frame downloaded images...”

I most enjoyed, “…learning about the technology to take place in the future.”
