Prof. Patrice George originally studied hand weaving in Sweden, and planned to live a rural life creating handwoven products after finishing school. But after finding her first job as a sample weaver for a major mill in NYC, she fell in love with the industrial side of the textile world. She became a specialist in computer-aided dobby and jacquard weaving, founding her own design studio in 1979.

Her clients have included major textile mills and manufacturers. She has worked with the United Nations, CARE, and other international organizations, to develop hand-woven products in developing for developing nations, including Jamaica, Mexico, China, Lesotho and Laos.

Patrice received her BA degree in History of Art from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), and studied traditional handweaving at Handarbetets Vänner in Stockholm, Sweden.

She joined FIT as an assistant professor in 2002, where she has been teaching lecture courses in the TDM department, as well as studio weaving classes in TSD department.

Previously, Patrice taught at the School of Visual Arts, Parsons, and the Art Institute of NYC. She has been a guest speaker at many textile conferences and many schools around the world. In 1994, she was a Fulbright lecturer in textile design at the University of Industrial Arts in Helsinki, Finland.

Articles on Patrice's work have appeared in the New York Times, USA Today, Personal Computing, and other national publications. She has published articles to Handwoven Magazine, and Textile Forum.
