GRADUATION CHECKLIST
Step 1: Submit an application for
graduation
the semester before you anticipate graduating
Step 2: The Registrar reviews your degree
audit to assess your academic progress and
then notifies you of your status in writing.
Step 3: Final graduation review takes
place at the end of the term when all grades are posted.
Students do not officially graduate until they have
filed their application for graduation, paid the application fee, and
successfully completed all degree requirements as outlined by their major.

COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY
The Commencement Ceremony is held once a year in May and includes
students expecting to graduate in December, January, May and July of
that academic year.
Diplomas are not awarded at the ceremony and attending the
ceremony is not the same as graduation from the college.
Individual names are not announced during the ceremony.
Commencement exercises are ceremonial and symbolic; participation
in this event is not to be confused with actual graduation from the
college.
Please see the
Office of Student Life, A713 for
answers to your questions about participating in the ceremony,
including cap and gown and tickets.

GRADUATION FAQs
Q: How do I know if I am on track to graduate by the next
semester?
A: Review your
degree audit online at
http://myfit.fitnyc.edu. If you have questions come
to C158 for
advisement.
Q: What does “Expected Graduation Date” mean on the graduation
application form?
A: The term you finish your last course or requirement for the
degree. Graduation review takes place at the end of each term (in
December, January, May and July). If your expected graduation date
changes, you must notify the Registrar.
Q: What happens if I don’t finish my last class or requirement by
the date I indicate on the form?
A: You will be notified by the Registrar’s Office at the end of the
term that you are not eligible for graduation. The application and
graduation fee are valid for four (4) consecutive graduation dates.
For example, if you apply for December 2009, your fee is good for
December 2009, January 2010, May 2010 and July 2010 graduation only.
Q: Can I graduate if I am within six (6) credits of finishing my
degree?
A: No! However you can attend
the ceremony in May if you are within six (6) credits of finishing
because candidates for July graduation are included in the
commencement ceremony held once a year in May.
Q: My goal is to earn a BFA or BS degree. Why do I need to file a
graduation application for my AAS degree?
A: An earned AAS degree is a graduation requirement for a BFA or BS
degree at FIT.
Q: Can I start a bachelor’s program if I am within six (6)
credits of finishing my AAS degree?
A: Please see the admissions office in room C139 for information
about admission to another degree at FIT.
Q: What happens if I don’t apply for graduation?
A: An application for graduation is required for each degree
program, e.g. AAS and BFA or BS. The application for graduation must
be filed before graduation will be confirmed and a diploma is mailed
to you.
Q: Why do I have to pay a graduation fee? What if I don’t want to
attend the commencement ceremony?
A: The $30.00 is a mandatory fee for graduation processing,
including graduation review and diploma production.

FORMER STUDENTS
Previously matriculated students who did not graduate and who are
no longer enrolled, may request a graduation eligibility review.
(Please see
Request for Re-Evaluation form.)
Written information will be provided to the student on his/her status
toward meeting degree requirements. If the student wishes to enroll at
FIT to complete the degree requirements, an application for
re-admission must be filed with the Admissions Office and an admission
decision must be rendered. Students who plan to complete the required
courses at another institution, should submit the permission to
transfer credit form.
All major/related required courses are valid toward the degree
for up to ten years from the point of admission. After ten years, those major courses
previously completed must be approved to fulfill current degree
requirements by the chairperson of the major department. It is the
student’s responsibility to contact the department chairperson for a
review of coursework and to obtain written permission for all courses
approved to meet current degree requirements. A copy of the written
permission must be submitted to the Registrar’s Office before any
further graduation review will take place. |
