Production Management
Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
It
was a momentous day for the Jay & Patty Baker School of
Business and Technology department here at FIT, when the
Production Management Department had their ribbon cutting
ceremony held on March 9th 2006.
The
ceremony brought together the New York City Council
Chairperson, Gerber Technology representatives, chairpersons
from each of the majors within the Jay and Patty Baker
School of Business and Technology, as well as other
dignitaries from the community.
Dr. Joyce
Brown, President of F.I.T. and Prof. Alan Kane, Dean of Jay
& Patty Baker School of Business and Technology, gave a
lovely speech on the synergy between the three groups in
bringing the wonderful new technology to this school. Dean
Kane showed his support in the planning and constructing of
this project, while recognizing the effort put in by Prof.
Mario Federici and the Production Management faculty and
Mrs. Maria Benitez.
City
Councilwoman Quinn talked about her dedication to the
students and it was heart warming to hear how she believed
FIT students are bringing the fashion industry to full
throttle in the metropolitan area. City Councilwoman Quinn
sponsored FIT to receive a Grant to update classrooms,
fought for the students to receive a better education and
for this we thanked her. With this particular Grant the
Production Management Department were able to purchase new
desks, cutting tables, dress forms, top of the line Gerber
equipment, new sewing machines and more.
Mr.
Robert Rivera, the Executive Director of Gerber Technology
spoke about how they love to work and support FIT and
acclaimed Production Management as having the best state of
the art equipment facility in the world. Gerber Technology
has provided FIT with over 2 millions dollars in software
and newer technology. To enhance the Production Management
program, Faculty and Technologist received an intensive
three week training program on the use and understanding of
new systems to readily educate the students.
The
ribbon-cutting ceremony was highlighted by the
demonstrations done by Prof. Linda Cohen on the AccuMark
program,
 Prof.
Ari Vega on the computerized spreading equipment, and Mr.
Victor Soto on the laser cutting system. The demonstration
of how a garment is created, from inception to the finished
product, awed the public; watched in amazement the
demonstrations of pattern creation, draping, sloper
development, digitizing, printing, spreading and cutting.
