Lailah TaylorAs a child, I was introduced to the idea that "women should always be well manicured", meaning hair, nails, feet, eyebrows, and face.  Little did I know, men were also interested in being well kept.  It wasn't until I became a teenager that I realized that there were more men in the nail salon than women!

Today we live in a world where presentation is essential and both sexes should have the opportunity to feel at their highest potential.  As a young woman, I feel that I should open the world of comfort and relaxation to men.  I am looking to open an all men's spa.

The Small Business Start Up course will allow me to understand the fundamentals of starting a business and directing it towards men from the age 25 to 50.  Questions that I hope to find answers to may include what type of environment can I create that is soothing for my chosen age range, what types of services should I provide, and where is the best location for my business.  Of course these are preliminary questions and at the completion of this course, I will have asked more questions than I've asked in my seventeen years of school.

I wanted to take this course because I have decided that I would like to open a small business once I have finished college.  My store will consist of clothing, literature, film, art, and maybe a cafe.  My target customers are 16 to mid twenty year olds that are more interested in an independent lifestyle rather than the high fashion market and popular music and film.

I would like to create an environment that allows my customers to socialize and shop at the same time.  The merchandise that my store will carry will be mostly from local independent clothing lines, musicians, artists, and writers.  If things work out well with one of my stores, hopefully I will be able to make more stores in different locations.  The locations that I am interested in are New York City, Asbury Park, San Francisco, Miami, and Houston.

I love Manhattan and will most likely be living here after going to college.  I'm interested in attending a school either in Philadelphia or Boston because I know New York City well enough and would want to have a different environment when going to college.  Regardless of where I attend, I hope to be majoring in some sort of business, but I won't know if this is entirely true until after this course. - Dianna Scarpa

Monique TingI'm still not sure what I want to do with my life, but starting my own business has definitely always been an option.  I'm still young and my world could be anything.  I knew if I ever went into any business I would need fundamentals.

This course was appealing as a way to gain an understanding of the foundation I would need, and if I meet the criteria to control a business by myself.  A lot goes into opening, even a small, store and being successful can be very difficult.  I hope that Small Business Start-Up can teach me how to become successful in appealing to people and developing the skills I need to hit the ground running.

From a very young age I began to think about what I wanted my career to be.  I thought about becoming many different things, and all of those things had one thing in common.  They were all greater then average.  I never wanted to have a regular job making an average salary.  So I decided that I one day wanted to own my own business.

I first heard about F.I.T's summer and Saturday live program while searching around the internet for a fashion related program for either after school or on the weekends.  When I went on the website and read about the program I decided to attend the Saturday Live program last Spring.  There I took The Business of Fashion and Manuel Patternmaking where I was taught a lot of important information about the fashion industry that I didn't know.  The things I learned will stay with my forever.

This semester back at F.I.T I decided to take Small Business Start Up because I want to finally achieve my goal of starting my own business that I have had since I was about 5 years old.  I want to one day own my own clothing company.  From the skills I learn in this program I hope to set up a very success business. - Tiffany Desilva

I have always been interested in fashion.  As a freshman in high school a friend told me to take classes at FIT to further my dreams in being a fashion designer.  I am now a junior in high school and after about ten classes at FIT I have skills such as fashion art, patternmaking, draping techniques, and various business skills.

Having all these skills, during my sophomore year of high school I started making my own clothes and having photo shoots. I started getting requests from friends wanting t-shirts and various garments.  After a summer interning at New York Couture, I was inspired by the way a small clothing business was run, from being around my boss and the way she took charge I thought that this is what I want to do.

I decided to take the Small Business class at FIT, It was introduced to me through a teacher at a Saturday Live class and I thought it would be a great idea.  I want to create a boutique with one of my friends which has two parts to it, a boutique where every piece is one of a kind and a section for t-shirts and clothes which are more massively produced in a wider size range.  I hope to expand and become one of the best designers in the world, design under my own label. - Emma Chopov

I was first told about the Pre- College Program by a friend about two years ago.  She knew that I had the same interests as her for which she had came to F.I.T. for Design and Merchandise.

My freshman year I started off thinking I wanted to be a fashion designer but after taking multiple courses, I realized that what I wanted to focus on had changed.  I am going to be a junior in high school after the end of this summer and my feelings for what I want to be involved in when I am older has changed to the business side of the industry.

I am testing out what I want to do specifically. No matter what it is that I decide to take part in for my future, I believe that one should have a background on business to know what exactly goes on and how everything works.  After an assembly during the Spring class I enrolled in, I listened to Professor Ari Vega's description of what Small Business Start Up is like and the story of a young man who is now very successful.  When I heard that story, I was inspired and decided to take advantage of an opportunity like this and sign up for the class. - Chelsea Simunovich

Carina MirandaThis course interested me for many reasons.  I was told by someone I needed to have a business sense if I wanted to work in the fashion and design industry, which I hope to do someday. This class seemed like a good introduction to developing a business and understanding the business behind most industries today.  I am always coming up with business concepts and I would like to create a business with one of my concepts.

Since I don't know much about owning a business and what goes into making it successful, I wanted to learn. One of the business concepts I am currently working on is a party planning business for children's' parties with my sister.  We have done a few parties in the past and I really think we could turn this into a real profitable business.  I think this would be a good thing to do during high school and maybe take it beyond into college or possibly even further.

Later in life, after college, I would like to work for myself in my own business. I know many people who work for themselves doing what they truly enjoy and they are happier and more successful than many people I know working in a company.  I would like to be one of those happy and successful business owners.  I understand how much work is involved in owning my own business, but I think I would enjoy it once I got the business going.  At this point, I'm not quite sure what kind of business I would like to own.  Some of my ideas were specialty clothing shops such as stores for those "hard to find" or "in between" sizes.  A concept a friend of mine mentioned to me recently was creating bottoms with shorter inseams for "vertically challenged" women.  She would like to pursue that concept and would like me to help her with the business end of it.  This course looked like it would help me with all of my goals. - Carina Miranda

Jessica OffmanI am a high school student who is interested in taking this course because I am passionate about owning my own fashion retail store in the future.  I believe that this course could provide a basis of knowledge and education towards my dreams.  I hope to learn entrepreneurial and management skills in order to advance and become a successful business owner.

It is important for me to lay down and stable, trustworthy foundation for my future at this point in my life, so that I am able to pursue my dreams to the fullest later on.  The entire F.I.T. experience, this course, and my drive towards ultimate success will most definitely will help me become the person that I hope to be. - Jessica Offman

Kelly MuseThe reason I wanted to take this course is because I want to major in business but I'm not sure exactly in what.  Business has been easy for me to comprehend over my high school years.  I've been able to sell products like crazy to costumers even if they had no need of what I was selling. I could take money and double that amount in two days.  Nothing could stand in my way if I was determined.

I understood the business world better than my mother because my father had taught me the basics and then the secrets to make it big.  But, I didn't know how to apply that concept to my life.  My friend brought up the F.I.T. summer pre-college courses to me over Christmas break and I knew this was my chance.  I've had an idea of starting up my own magazine since the start of high school but I didn't have enough training or information to try to make my idea into a reality.

I had learned that F.I.T. offered Advertising Design Basics and Small Business Start-up, a great combination for a future magazine producer.  Small Business Start-up caught my eye because even if my magazine would not be successful the class would still provide me with information and knowledge of how to run other businesses that would be of interest to me.  Being able to take a course in Small Business Start-up will definitely help me start from a beginning and hopefully carry me to an end with a happily ever after. - Kelly Muse
