Small Business Startup
Pre-College Program - HMG
165 A
Production Management

The reason I would like to attend the
small business program is, because it will help give me the
foundation that I will need to open my own company in the
future. Also the information that I will learn could help
me understand how a business should operate.

After walking twenty
blocks from 10th street, spilling strawberry smoothie on my
freshly ironed shift dress, and going to the wrong class for
the first 10 minutes of the day, I have finally arrived in
Professor Vega’s small business start up class. Immediately
his kind demeanor and huge smile confirmed that my morning
nerves were no longer needed. He asked us why we were here.
Why had we, high school students on summer vacation who
could be relaxing at home or at a beach, choose to be in his
classroom learning about the business of fashion? I have yet
to think of an answer to his question but after hearing
about the details of the course I know one thing, I am in
the right place.

I attended F.I.T. summer live last year and found my classes
very informative, the only problem is that I didn’t take a
business class and that is that I am interested in. I have
always wanted to start a small boutique in SoHo. I wanted to
sell clothing to woman from ages eighteen to fifty. I was
inspired by Patricia Field and her ability to open a small
store and bring designers such as Heatherette into every
home in America. Other than making designer names famous, I
always want to be my own boss. I am willing to work hard and
study hard, because this is something I truly want to do.

My name is Kristy
Lin and I was interested in this class because I always
liked art and making jewelry, but knew that I needed to
learn the practical side of the industry in order to be
successful. As high school rapidly flies by, the question
of "what do you want to do with your life" inevitably
arises. I decided that I didn't want to work for someone
else, in a cubicle from nine to five. Instead, I wanted to
carve my own niche, find a career that would fit me, instead
of the other way around.

I decided to take this course for many different reasons. Right now my father and brother manage our family bar and
restaurant which has been in our family for four generations
and has been extremely successful. I have grown up watching
my father own and operate his business and control every
aspect of it which has resulted in me having a strong
interest in starting and running my own business. With that
in mind I signed up for this class hoping to learn more
about starting my own business. One of my goals is to start
my own t-shirt line and be able to create the product,
market it and sell it own my own. I know I will learn a lot
from this class and hopefully I will use it all in an
extremely beneficial way which will lead me to my future
success.

I became interested
in this course because of my mother. Not in a way that she
forced me to take this class, but because she started her
own business a couple years ago and ever since has been
extremely successful with it. She spends most of her free
time sewing and knitting and thinking of new ideas for items
to add to her boutique. To her this isn't something that she
has to do, its something that truly makes her happy.

I
chose this course because I wanted to create my own
business. After becoming interested in crafting, I knew that
I wanted to be able to sell my work. I started to sell my
work to my high school friends, but that was just a start
and I wanted to sell to a bigger audience.

At
my high school, Bergen County Academies, I am in the
Business and Finance academy. Because I made the decision to
enroll in a business oriented high school at a young age,
many of my interests revolve around activities in the
business field. At school, I have taken business
introduction, marketing, and management classes. Also, I
took an SAP Technology class which helped me learn about
databases, logistics, and financial management of a company.

During my junior
year of high school I began to go on college board to search
for colleges I might be interested in attending. My mom had
suggested to me to search for FIT because she had gone there
to get her associates degree in cosmetic merchandising. I
began to do some research on the school and soon fell in
love with the idea of going there to study fashion
merchandising. One day when I was on the FIT website I came
across the summer program. I thought this would be a great
way to find out if I really wanted to attend college there.
The only problem was golf.

When my college
counselor first recommended looking at FIT's Summer Live, I
searched for courses that would help me to understand the
business behind the fashion industry and how I could excel
within it. This class specifically caught my eye; my mother
had always talked of opening her own boutique, and it slowly
became my own. I decided to pursue her dream as quickly as
possible. Instead of a boutique, I wished to open my
own small bakery.

I first heard about
the FIT high school summer program from a couple of friends
that took some courses last summer and found it really
worthwhile. Having always had a strong interest in fashion,
I was very intrigued with the courses available. Even though
this was one of the only classes available at the time I
signed up, it is a course that I am truly interested in and
find will be very beneficial.

In middle school I
took a home economics class in which we learned about being
an entrepreneur. I was inspired to start my own business, so
I decided to pursue business further. My friend and I had
discussed starting an Ebay business or a small bakery when
we were older, except we were clueless on where to start and
how to market ourselves.
