Small Business Startup
Pre-College Program - HMG
165 A
Production Management

In life we as people dream and fascinate
where we want to be in our future and what profession we
crave. As a child drawing on napkins and tables in
restaurants I have always wanted to become a fashion
Designer, I’ve wanted people to wear what I design, talk
about what I design, and look at in worldwide magazines what
I design whether it being a fall, summer, spring, winter, or
even fall collection. I enrolled myself in FIT Small
Business Start-up to get a feel of what it really is like to
become an independent Person for life and to inherited more
knowledge of the fashion industry. I want to start my own
clothing line and become an Entrepreneur. I feel necessary
to take any advantage you have in life that is offered to
you so by taking Small Business Start-Up it’s a benefit to
me for my future.

Throughout
the past few years I have been contemplating and revising my
plan for starting my own small business. My friend,
Jeannie Prounis, and I silk-screen t-shirts; it started as a
hobby but now we wish to take our ideas to the next level.
I took this class hoping that it would face me in the right
direction and take me one step closer to reaching my goal of
starting my own business. So far this class has given
me a new understanding of how to go about doing so. I
am grateful that I have the opportunity to take these
classes, and looking forward to what I will learn next.

My name is Merica
Kahn. I have always had a ‘passion for fashion,’ but was not
clear on what I wanted to pursue in this industry. Small
business start-up is the third high school program that I am
taking at FIT. So far, this has been my favorite class. It
has directed me into an area of fashion I never knew was so
intriguing. The information is well informed and has shown
me pieces of the fashion industry that I can get involved
in. The information is straight forward and has broadened my
own horizon. In the past three classes we have had so far
there was not a dull moment, I have learned the positions I
could get into are all moving at a fast pace which is a
positive aspect for me because I tend to bore easily, but I
do not think that is possible in this industry.

Since
I was a little girl I have had a specific dream instilled in
my mind. This dream was to open my own business.
By taking this Small Business Startup class it has begun to
prove itself useful in my everyday life, and my upcoming
career as a business owner. This class has given me a
better sense of reality as to how hard and expensive it is
to own your own business. When I get older I hope to
open up my own party planning company, and each week in
class I am being presented with more and more options and
ways as how to do so. This course provided me with
the basic foundation I need in order to market myself, and
launch into the corporate world.

I have always wanted to open my own
clothing boutique, and become a manager of my own store.
I had no idea where to start so I decided to come to the
Fashion Institute of Technology, and take a pre-college
course. I enrolled in Small Business Start-up, and the
class has taught me so much; much more than I expected.
I feel that it is important to learn as much as I can, in
all the fields of the fashion industry, to help me succeed
with my future plans. This class has shown me that
what I want to do is right for me, and it will give me the
sources and skills needed to make my dream become a reality.

I’ve always been
interested in the fashion industry and I thought a business
class would help me get a good feel for what it’s really
like. I’m not sure yet if
I want to start my own business, but this class has given me
good ideas, pointers, and outlook in case I choose to do so
after college. Although I haven’t narrowed down my decision
yet about what I want my future to entail, I have learned
that you really should know the business of fashion if you’d
like to be successful; and of course that’s what everyone
wants, including myself. Every week in class, my knowledge
grows, as well as my expectations for the career ahead of
me, and I can’t wait to get it started.

I
have known what I've wanted to do with my life longer than
I've known how babies are made. At this point in time I do
work as a freelance graphic designer, web designer, and
photographer. When I was 9 I got a tutor to
teach me programs and coding languages. Then, when I was 12
I took my first pre-college course at Parsons School of
Design. After two semesters of classes there, I started
classes at FIT. I have learned so much in my time here, and
I hope I will continue to learn more. It has helped me grow
as a person, and mature enough to desire to create my own
business.

I
have always wanted to pursue a career in design, and
someday, maybe own a firm, or small business. For the past
few years I have been taking as many art, and design related
classes I could get into. A few months ago I found this
course, and thought it would be great to help me organize my
ideas, and maybe put together something solid. I have
learned that it is not nearly as easy as it sounds to start
up your own small business. It takes a lot of time, effort,
and paperwork. Learning about business is interesting and
will eventually be very beneficial to whatever career path I
choose to follow.
So far I have really enjoyed the program,
and being only half way through the course, I feel I have
learned more than I have in any other class. We have
discussed the details of starting a small business, the
exact forms, charts, as well as we are beginning to write
business plans. I came into this class knowing nothing about
owning or starting a small business. I still have a lot of
decisions to make about my future career, but I am one step
closer to making it happen.

Hi,
my name is Amanda Kamhawy I am a senior at Jericho Senior
High School. I decided to take the “Small business Start Up”
class because one day I want to own my own clothing and
accessories store. Professor Vega has helped me a lot with
learning about how to open a business properly and how to
become successful. One of the first things I learned was
networking, being open and being friendly with everyone.
Making your network bigger makes you known and helps you in
the long run.
I liked learning how to create my own business card, letter
head and envelope. I’m really bad with computers and I
actually got the hang of using Microsoft programs that I
never knew how to use. I had a few problems at first, and
Professor Vega would not help me figure them out, because he
wanted me to do it on my own. It was good that Professor
Vega did not want to help me because now if I run into the
same problem again, I will know how to fix it right away.
