Department Policies and Standards

Attendance

Students are expected to be in class and participate! Three (3) unexcused absences constitute grounds for failure of the course and are up to the discretion of the professor. Students are responsible for obtaining all material missed due to their absence from a classmate. The fact that a student misses a previous class DOES NOT excuse that student from completing an assignment when due.

Lateness

Classes start at 10 minutes after the hour for all day classes and 20 minutes after the hour for all evening classes. Students are expected to be on time. Three (3) tardy will constitute one absence.

Grading

The FIT grading policy applies to the Packaging Department and is as follows:

A+, A, A- (4.0/3.8/3.6)

Stands for excellence and is issued for varying degrees of exceptional and outstanding work. The student has met ALL deadlines, has demonstrated individual initiatives; has undertaken quality research, has demonstrated problem-solving skills and exceptional creativity and originality.

B+, B. B- (3.5/3.0/2.6)

“Very Good to Good” evaluation; no major flaws in any aspect of the work, but some aspects could be improved. Although work demonstrates a certain degree of originality and creativity, it is not sufficient quality to be characterized as exceptional or significantly outstanding.

C=, C, C- (2.5/2.0/1.6)

“Satisfactory” evaluation; work is not of sufficient quality to be placed in the “Good” or “Very Good” range, but has met the basic project requirements. Work appears adequate, but demonstrates little creative or innovative concepts. Work fails to maintain a consistent level of quality and many aspects of the work are in need of improvement.

D (1.0)

“Unsatisfactory” evaluation; lowest possible passing grade. Major flaws and very little if any creative and innovative qualities demonstrated. Poor time management, deadlines not met, ideas not developed, presentation skills poor.

F (0)

“Inadequate” or “Unacceptable” evaluation; work does not meet minimal standards or requirements. Little or no effort made by student to understand, or complete work; excessive absences; failure to participate in class or to accept constructive criticism. Deadlines not met, no originality or creativity demonstrated.

INC

“Incomplete” issued by the instructor’s discretion to students as a result of extenuating circumstances beyond student’s control (serious illness, family death, accident). Course work must be completed within six weeks of the start of the following semester. “INC” is computed to an “F” until the appropriate letter grade is submitted by the instructor. Students are responsible for contacting the instructor to complete the necessary forms.

W/A

Instructor authorized withdrawal, which may be assigned after six (6) weeks at the faculty’s discretion. Carries no penalty; does not affect the student’s GPA.

W/D

Student-initiated authorized withdrawal up to six (6) weeks. Does not affect GPA.

W/F

Unauthorized withdrawal, which may be assigned after six (6) weeks at the instructor’s discretion. Carries penalty and is equivalent to and “F” in GPA.

Z

No grade issued by instructor at grade processing deadline. Does not affect GPA.

Class Participation

Participation in class is expected from each and every student in each and every class. If a student expects appropriate professional input from instructors, he or she is expected to come to class on time and be prepared; produce work from class; actively participate in class discussions; meet deadlines; seek extra help and counseling from instructors during office hours; and perform relevant, independent research on their project as required.
