StyleCat: Library Catalog 7/9/08

Welcome to the new StyleCat Library Catalog. There are new features which enhance your ability to find resources for your research.

StyleCat Library Catalog is the online catalog for materials in the Gladys Marcus Library. Materials listed in the online catalog include books, videos, slides, magazines/ serial titles, electronic resources, picture files and other non-print materials. Search by author, title, subject, keyword, or other fields. StyleCat allows you to search by library collection (for example, Art Reference or Special Collections), save sets of results, email search results, more links to the Internet and much more.

Logon to StyleCat

StyleCat Library Catalog is part of the 64 SUNY-campus libraries available in one catalog, SUNYCat. Through StyleCat or SUNYCat, all SUNY students, faculty and staff may borrow materials through interlibrary loan. Click for details about interlibrary loan.

Access to StyleCat Library Catalog is available through:
	Library workstations in the Reference Department (4th floor) & library computer labs -- click on Digital Library icon
	Dedicated StyleCat terminals available on all 3 floors of the Library.

Basic Keyword Search

Basic Keyword Search is the simplest way to search for items in StyleCat Library Catalog.

Enter word or words to search in Type word or phrase: field

Select which field to search using the dropdown menu in Field to Search.
Note: Selecting All Fields will give you the most results. For more accurate results, select a particular field to search (i.e., Author or Title)

Click Go

Basic Search Results List

Results List provides a list of records that match your search request, including:

Cover	Collection/Call #
Author	Copies Owned/Out
Title	Availability
Year

Sort options include:

Author	Author/Year	Author/Title
Title	Year/Author	Title/Year
Year

Click on an individual title for full bibliographic information which includes author, title, publisher, year, notes, subject headings and more.

Collection/Call # tells you where the item is located. Write down all the information to find the item.

Copies Owned/Out shows how many copies are in the Library & how many are currently checked out.

Availability gives the Holdings which includes locations and the circulation status for each copy. Click Is it here? to see Holdings screen.

Full View Bibliographic Record

Full View provides full bibliographic information for each individual record. Active links include:

Imprint (publisher)
Call number
Subject
Added entries
Holdings: click availability to determine the number of copies in the library & their status.

Availability shows the Holdings for each title: the location [floor & collection] and the call number for each item on the record. It also will tell you the Loan Status for each item: the type of loan [Library Use or Regular Loan] and whether or not the book is Available [on the shelf] or checked out and when it is due back.

Browse Search

Browse Search allows you to view a list of records from one of the many indexes available in StyleCat, including Exact Title, Author, Series, Document Type and more. Browse is part of the drop-down menu on the Basic search screen.

Enter word or words to search. Note: Browse Search begins with the first word you enter.
Select which index to browse using the dropdown menu
Click Go

Browse Search Results List

Browse Search Results List is an alphabetical list of records based on the criteria you chose. To view the items for a particular author, click on the author's name.

The complete list of records for your author is now available.

Advanced Search

Advanced Search allows you to search two fields at the same time using boolean searching [AND, OR, NOT, e.g., poetry AND (anthology OR collection)]

In addition, you may limit your search results by the following:

Language
Year
Format (Audio, books, etc.)
Collection (Art Reference, Reserves, Special Collections, etc.)
Document Type (Periodicals, Thesis, Electronic Book, etc.)

Advanced Search Results

Advanced Searching generally gives results that are more focused than a Basic Keyword Search.

Librarian Search: CCL (Common Command Language) Search

On the screen it says "Librarian Search." You have to know the indexing codes in order to use CCL effectively. Below is a list of the indexing codes to use when searching.

Here is an example of a CCL search:

WRD=graphic* and WYR=2006->2007 and WCL=ZMAIN

This will yield a list of items published in 2006 or 2007 on graphics, graphic design, graphic designers, etc. that are in the Main Stacks.
