Call numbers
Like most U.S. academic libraries, the Gladys Marcus Library catalogs materials using the Library of Congress classification system
to organize our collections by subject area.    The complete call number given for an item, a combination of letters and numbers (e.g., PS 3525 .I96 G6) indicates that specific item. Since items are arranged by subject, books on related topics often have similar call numbers.  [For more information about the LC classification system and call numbers used to locate materials, click here.]

Locations within the Library
Within the 3 floors (4th, 5th & 6th floors) of the Library, there are many locations / collections, such as Main, Reference Desk, and Reference Stacks. When finding the call number for an item using the
StyleCat   Online Catalog be sure to write down the floor( location),  collection & the complete call number for each item.  For example:

4th fl.  Art Reference TT509 .D473 1995

4th fl.  Reference Trade_E HC427.95 .D65 2005

5th fl.  Main Stacks PR9499.3.S38 S83 1994

5th fl.  Circulation Desk Video TT505 .C55 03/11/03 c.1

Missing items
If you cannot find an item on the shelf where it should be located, first try looking on nearby shelves, book carts, tables or by the photocopy machines; another library user may have inadvertently reshelved the item incorrectly or left it where it was last used. If you still cannot locate the item, report it to the service desk on the floor where the item should be (Reference Desk on the 4th floor, Circulation Desk on the 5th floor, Periodicals on the 6th floor). A library employee will do a search to ascertain the status of the material, and will contact you if the item is found.
