Finding Information by Decade 12/2008

StyleCat  |  Digital Library   |  Internet    |  Select Book Titles

This guide will help you navigate through StyleCat [Online Catalog] (our database of books, periodicals, and multimedia holdings in the FIT Library) and pertinent online resources FIT has available on the Digital Library.  You will be able to locate Decade information in the following areas:

I. GENERAL TRENDS       
II. FASHION                 
III. ARCHITECTURE        

Each area above is subdivided into:
(A) StyleCat search techniques for General Trends, Fashion, and Architecture
(B) Recommended FIT Digital Library online resources and search techniques for finding decade General Trends, Fashion, and Architecture information
(C) Internet searching (Google for Fashion and Architecture only)
(D) Select Decade book titles:  General Trends, Fashion, and Architecture.


 
A.  StyleCat [Online Catalog] SEARCH TECHNIQUES

GENERAL TRENDS:  SUBJECT  SEARCH
A search in the SUBJECT FIELD will yield broad results  if  you are looking for general DECADE information.  Below are examples of “Decade” terms to type into the "SUBJECT" field:
“Nineteen sixties” or “nineteen seventies” or “nineteen eighties” in SUBJECT;
“19th century” or “20th century” or “nineteenth century” or “twentieth century” in SUBJECT

GENERAL TRENDS:   ALL FIELDS SEARCH
For the word/phrase that you type, the “ALL FIELDS”  search looks in each field of the record such as "TITLE" or "SUBJECT".
Type “Sixties” or “decade” or “80s” or “eighties” or “nineteen sixties” in "ALL FIELDS" for the broadest search; limit your search by typing in these terms in the "TITLE" or "SUBJECT" fields.

FASHION IN THE DECADES:  SUBJECT SEARCH

To find FASHION in the Decades, in Advanced Search, type each term in the "SUBJECT" fields:
FASHION (in subject) and 20th CENTURY (in subject)
COSTUME (in subject) and 20th CENTURY (in subject)
FASHION (in subject) and NINETEEN TWENTIES (in subject)
CLOTHING AND DRESS (in subject) and 20th CENTURY (in subject)

With the above search strategy, you may find too many book titles.  To limit your search, type the date in the TITLE field and combine it with a FASHION "SUBJECT" search as below:
1920s (or 20s) (in title) and FASHION (in subject)
1962 (in title) and FASHION (in subject)

ARCHITECTURE / INTERIOR DESIGN:   DECADES:  SUBJECT SEARCH

To find books on Architecture for specific decades use the following search strategy (for Architecture in the 1930s as an example) type:

“Architecture” in SUBJECT and 1930 or 1930s or 1930’s in ALL FIELDS.    The 1930 (or 1930s or 1930’s) will be picked up in the title or the contents section of the record.   You will have to conduct three separate searches:
(1) ARCHITECTURE (in subject) and 1930 (in all fields)
(2) ARCHITECTURE (in subject) and 1930s (in all fields) and
(3) ARCHITECTURE (in subject) and 1930’s (in all fields)
 

To limit your research to a specific style of architecture, type in those styles in the SUBJECT field.   Remove the parentheses when typing in the SUBJECT field.    The estimated period is for your reference only and should not be typed in:

If you do not get any results for the style  of architecture you are researching, type the architecture term description in “All Fields”

FASHION IN THE DECADES:

Under HISTORY find:
(1) American Decades. 10 volumes, 2001
(2) American Decades Primary Sources. 10 volumes, 2004
-- Go to eTable and choose a Decade
-- Look for: Fashion
(3) The People’s Chronology. 3d ed., 2005
 -- Select a decade, then “Everyday Life” for Fashion
(4) Encyclopedia of Clothing and Fashion. 3 volumes, 2005
-- Conduct a search for (for example) the “1990s” and remember to check off
‘within this publication’.
(5) Fashion, Costume, and Culture. 5 volumes. 2004
-- Choose a volume
-- Note the ‘Timeline’ feature and its View PDF option
-- The ‘Where to Learn More’ option includes links to relevant web sites.
For example, in Volume 5 (Modern World) a “Hair History” web site with graphics can be accessed
