Searching tips
-
Start
with a word or phrase that describes your topic and search
in "Basic Keyword Search" (e.g. Brooklyn Bridge;
Bloomingdales)
-
Click on the title of any item that looks relevant, scroll
down to the part of the page called "subject". See if there are
other words that describe your topic (e.g. if you tried
'Grand Central Station', note that 'Grand
Central Terminal' is the subject heading) and search
again using those subjects to find more listings.
-
Search
broader terms as necessary (e.g. bridges New York; stores New
York; shopping New York).
-
Often you will
need to try more than one subject heading or different ways
of phrasing the same topic (e.g. apartment houses, architecture,
historic buildings); speak to a Reference Librarian if you’re
having trouble with the wording.
