If you are having trouble accessing or using parts of the Digital Library, look at the questions
and answers below and see if you can figure out what and where the problem is.

If you are having problems with any aspect of the Digital Library, let us know!
Visit, call, or e-mail if you need help.

TYPES OF PROBLEMS:
General access to the Digital Library  |  Logging in or computer settings  |
Getting into a specific database/service  |  Problems within a specific database/service |
In the meantime...

General Access to the Digital Library

Are you a currently registered FIT student or employee?

If not, you do not have access to the Digital Library.

Many public libraries subscribe to some of the same services available on the Digital Library.
For more information about online databases available from other libraries, click here.

Logging in or computer settings

Are you using the correct user name/password combination?
Are you able to log on to computers in the Library or campus computer labs?
Are you able to log in to your FIT e-mail account at MyFIT  or  FIT Webmail or FIT IMail ?

For the Digital Library, use the same user name & password that you use for your FIT e-mail and logging on to campus computers.  This may not be the same as what you use to access ANGEL, online registration, or other online FIT services.

If you haven't used your FIT e-mail or have been forwarding your FIT e-mail to a different e-mail address and aren't familiar with the proper format, click for details.

If you changed your password from the default (birthday) password, use the new one.

Is your password not working or has it expired?

See IT for FIT  for information on resetting or retrieving your password.

Changing Your Password walks you through the process.

Do you have pop-ups blocked?

All Digital Library Services require login with an FIT user name & password; often the screen that requests it shows up as a pop-up.  If so, disable pop-up blocker for this site.

Are you trying to access the Digital Library from a computer that has a firewall or anti-virus software on it (e.g. a computer at work, rather than at home, or a computer in a public place)?

Often the problem is caused by the security settings on your computer; a firewall or virus- blocking software may not be allowing the pages to load and open.

This is a common problem when using a computer at work. We suggest that you do not disable security settings on an office computer, but instead talk to your company's IT department about a solution.

Try checking whether your computer is blocking cookies from FIT or from the specific databases you are trying to open.  These cookies may need to be permitted in order to open the page(s).

For help with these technical issues, contact your workplace IT department (for computers at your work) or IT for FIT (212 217-HELP) if you are using your own computer.

What Internet Browser are you using?

Generally Internet Explorer and Firefox allow pages to open.

Others, such as AOL's browser, may not work.  The following database on the Digital Library is known to have problems when used with certain versions of browsers: ARTSTOR

Getting into a Specific Database/service

Are you having trouble accessing several Digital Library services or just one?

1) Try to open several databases. If you can open others, but are still having problems with one, please let us know.  Most likely it is a temporary connection problem that single service, but we will follow up with the vendor.

2) If you are having trouble with several services, check if they are all from the same vendor (e.g. Gale, EBSCO, etc).  You can check this by looking at Digital Library Databases by Name A to Z for a name listed in brackets after the database name (e.g. General OneFILE [Gale]).  If the databases giving you problems are from the same vendor, please let us know.  Usually it is a temporary problem, but we will follow up.

Is the Digital Library database you are using asking for another user name & password?

There are a few services that require an ADDITIONAL user name & password which are unique for each database.  Do not  use your FIT username & password within any individual database.

These user names & passwords may change during the semester, and are listed on a separate page which has the actual link to enter the database. You will be directed to this page after you have first logged in with your FIT user name and password. If you try to enter the database from a different page you may have bookmarked, you will not see the most up-to-date information you need to use it.

Problems within a specific database/service

Each database is unique.  Let us know the specific problem you have and we will try to resolve it . Where are you stuck?  Are you getting any error messages?

The fastest way to reach us during library hours is by phone (212 217-4400).  If possible, have your computer on as you talk to us, so we can guide you through a step-by-step solution.

If we are closed, you can e-mail us. We will answer as soon as possible.  The more information you supply us, the easier it will be to resolve the problem. Be very specific describing your problem:
▪  when (date, time) you had the problem;
▪  from where (on campus, off campus, work computer, etc);
▪  what database(s) you tried using;
▪  what's not working for you;
▪  any popup windows/error messages you have received.

In the meantime:

If you can't get a databases to work for you, try remote access databases through the New York, Brooklyn, or Queens Public Libraries.  Other libraries offer many databases available on Digital Library.

You need an appropriate public library card for access to these database.  For more information about these other libraries, click here.
