ART FULL TEXT & ART RETROSPECTIVE

Art Full Text is a database that indexes and abstracts articles from magazines published throughout the world. Some full-text coverage is also included. In addition to articles, Art Full Text indexes reproductions of works of art that appear in indexed periodicals. Indexing coverage begins 1984; abstracting coverage begins with January 1994. The abstracts range from 50 to 300 words and describe the content and scope of the source articles. Full-text coverage begins in 1997.

Art Retrospective (for older articles) has no full text but cumulates citations to the print version of Art Index published between 1929-1984. The database cites articles from periodicals published throughout the world. coverage includes English-language periodicals, yearbooks, and museum bulletins, as well as periodicals published in French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Dutch.

Subjects Covered
Advertising Art, Antiques, Archaeology, Architecture and Architectural History, Art History, Computers in Art, Crafts, Decorative Arts, Fashion Design, Folk Art, Graphic Arts, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Motion Pictures, Museology, Non-Western Art, Painting, Photography, Pottery, Sculpture, Television, Textiles, Video.

These databases aren't the best place to search for images (Grove's, EBSCO Image Collection, and Internet image searches would be better), though some images appear in the Acrobat (pdf) versions of the articles. They're best for finding criticism and other information on works of art. Art Full Text is one of the few databases which indexes Fashion Theory.

First select the databases you want to search, then click Art Full Text and Art Index Retrospective 1929-1984 on the DIGITAL LIBRARY under Art & Design Topics.  [FIT Username/Password required for access.]

Picture: Sample Search from Art Full Text

To begin a search in Art Full Text, enter your search term(s) after "Search for:"

No need to use all the words in the artist's and the painting's names. Just SEURAT JATTE will do.

After "as:" on the right, choose ARTIST.

Names of many paintings are indexed in the author field, but not all. If this search doesn't turn up enough hits try using "Keyword" or even "All-Smart Search." A keyword search looks through the citation and abstract, while All-Smart Search looks at the full text as well.

In this example, we are searching for information on SEURAT JATTE as a Artist search.

Click START.
