COLLECTIONS OF MATERIALS

Newspapers and Periodicals
Periodicals Services holds approximately 525 current and 300 non-current magazine and newspaper titles. Our holdings are geared toward the course listings at FIT, and in keeping with that curriculum, we focus on titles that serve the fashion business, interior design, graphic design and marketing industries. We have a wide variety of current trade, foreign and “glossy” magazines, including titles suited for specific class assignments.  We are always interested in any suggestions you may have for new titles the Library may want to purchase or gifts you may want to give to the Library to enhance our collection.

The majority of titles can be paged from the Periodicals Service Desk in the 6th floor reading room. Other, older titles may be available in the open shelves as well. For complete listings, see our Periodicals by Title list. Note the special codes for titles that have ceased publication or for which there are gaps in our regular holdings.

If you need magazines for a more general topic, our Periodicals by Subject list may help you. In this index, we’ve sorted and described each magazine in our collection by its main subject of interest. This list also notes titles printed for use by the trade, as opposed to ones mainly for a general readership.

Designer “Look Books”
The Library has wide-ranging holdings of designer collection “look books.” These are photo books that designers put out for buyer use, comprised of images of each runway look for a specific collection. Our holdings for these are not necessarily continuous, but nonetheless comprise a useful fashion reference for a broad range of designer collections.

Designer and Fashion Files
The Library possesses a unique collection of photographs clipped from fashion magazines over the years.
This collection is arranged by designer name or fashion subject, and then by decade.

The Designer and Fashion Files can be searched using StyleCat  StyleCat Logo Library Catalog:

1.  Under "Basic Keyword Search", type designer files or fashion files in the "Type word or phrase" field.

  2.  Select Series from the "Field to search" menu.
  3.  Click on the "Go" button.

Store and Mail Order Catalogs
Periodicals Services houses a collection of popular store catalogs. Patrons can view product and price listings from various retail outlets: Ann Taylor, L. L. Bean, Nordstrom, Eddie Bauer, and Victoria's Secret, to name just a few.

Annual Reports
View annual reports to see how companies like Nike, Kenneth Cole, Federated and GAP are spending money and managing assets.

Forecasting Services
The Library subscribes to a number of forecasting services intended for use by professionals in the fashion and design industries. Use of these forecasts is restricted to FIT faculty and students; a currently validated FIT ID is REQUIRED. Orientations on using forecast services may be requested by FIT faculty for their classes. Information and online request form can be found at Bibliographic Instruction / Orientations / Tours of the Library.

Where to find materials
Desk staff are available to assist you in locating and using current periodicals, newspapers, and microforms. Some materials are available for browsing in the Open Stacks, but most materials in this department are in the Closed Stacks behind the Periodicals Service Desk. We also have a variety of reference guides available to help patrons find what they need:
StyleCat StyleCat Logo Library Catalog: Search for periodicals titles.

Periodicals by Title: All the titles held in Periodicals Services are listed here, in alphabetical order. This list includes the start and end dates of each title, its frequency, and some information on the location of the title (i.e., Open Stacks, At Desk, etc.).

Periodicals by Subject: All the titles held in Periodicals Services are listed here, sorted by commonly requested subject headings. This list includes start and end dates for each title, as well as a short description and its intended audience.

Designer Files/Fashion Files Index: This list details all the Designer and Fashion Files in the Periodicals holdings. It breaks down each designer or subject into its individual folders, divided by decades.

Fashion Forecast Index: This list details all the individual forecasting services available in the library: company name, season, a brief description of each item, and the number/letter code by which each item is filed. An index to the most recent seasons available can be found at Forecasting Services. Use of fashion forecasts is restricted to FIT faculty and students; a currently validated FIT ID is REQUIRED.

Loan periods & related fines
There is no circulation of Periodicals materials out of the Library.  Microfilm reader/printers, photocopiers, and scanners are available.  See Library Copier Services for details.
There are several different types of materials in Periodicals Services.  Time limits have been set up for each type to make sure that materials can be available to as many people as possible:

Display Items: These are the popular magazines displayed directly behind the Periodicals Service Desk. They are the current issues of frequently requested titles (such as Vogue, HFN, or Architectural Digest).  These items must be returned to the desk within one hour. The fine for returning these items late is $1.00 per each hour late.

Today’s Newspapers: The library subscribes to three popular daily newspapers: New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Women's Wear Daily. The current issue of each of these titles must be returned to the desk within one hour. The fine for returning these items late is $1.00 per each hour late.

Forecasting Services: The three current seasons of our subscription forecasting services are restricted. They must be used in a particular section of the department, they cannot be copied, photographed or scanned, and they must be returned to the service desk within two hours. These materials will be collected from the student-borrower at the end of the two hour period. For more detailed information on the restrictions to the use of these materials, please see Forecasting Services.

Non-current or non-display items: The library subscribes to nearly 525 titles which means that many titles are not on current display. We also have back issues of all the titles which we do display. Patrons may borrow up to five single issues (or two bound volumes) at one time. There is no time limit on these items, but patrons must return all materials before the Periodicals Service Desk closes.  The fine for keeping any of these items overnight is $10.00 per item per day.

Designer or Fashion Files:  There is no time limit on these files, but  they must be returned before the Periodicals Service Desk closes. All pieces must be returned in their original numerical order. The fine for lost or missing items is a $20.00 processing fee plus the cost of replacing the original image.  Many pieces from these files are old and irreplaceable.  We ask that you use them with special care.  The fine for keeping any of these items overnight is $10.00 per item per day.

Theft or mutilation of library materials

From the Student Handbook: Theft or mutilation of library materials could lead to expulsion from the college.  The penalty for the mutilation of library items is two-fold:

A monetary fine to cover replacement plus a fee for processing.

Suspension of borrowing privileges for a period of up to one full semester.

Vandalizing library periodicals selfishly removes these items from use by anyone else. Please don’t do it!
