Middle East Conflict

2007 ITM PRACTICUM
CHANGED FROM ISRAEL TO BRAZIL
Due to the
Middle East conflict and the possibility that
it might not end by the time of our
trip in January, the destination of the 2007
Practicum has been changed to
BRAZIL.
Participants
will be doing the same research projects they
had selected for Israel but in the context of
Brazil. The class will visit businesses,
factories, trade organizations, and
government agencies in Rio de Janeiro
and
Sao Paulo. A complete itinerary will be
available in
September. The fee of the trip will be the
same.
Students who had registered to participate
in Israel should inform the ITM Secretary, Dasia Davis,
at Dasia_Davis@FITnyc.edu , or at (212)
217-8490 whether they are coming to Brazil.

The Educational Foundation for the Fashion Industries (EFFI)
seeks applicants for the position of Director of Alumni
Relations. Reporting to the Vice President for
Institutional Advancement, the Director will be a
creative self-starter with strong leadership and
communication skills. The Director will develop programs
and create close relationships between the college and
its 40,000 plus alumni.
The Director will plan and coordinate a
variety of alumni programs including gatherings, special
events, on-campus activities, and off-campus events for
regional alumni chapters. The successful candidate will
assess the alumni relations area’s needs and priorities,
evaluate the effectiveness of programs, and recommend
necessary changes.

International Trade Student Association

VISITS USTR
ITSA traveled to Washington
D.C. April 27th and 28th to meet with trade
representatives and to tour the city. Students visited
the USTR's office and met with textile and apparel trade
negotiators for an informative and stimulating
discussion of current trade issues. They also visited
many of Washington D.C.'s attractions including the
Georgetown area, the Capitol, and the White House. In
the picture (L to R) are Alpana Aggarwal, Viviana Duque,
Marisa Miranda, Stephanie Torres, and Tim Kent. Also

Research & Data Management
Assistant
The
Foreign Policy Association (FPA) seeks a part-time
volunteer to assist the Sales & Fulfillment
Department in achieving project targets over the
next three months. This key position is ideal for a
self-starter—providing the volunteer a high degree
of autonomy in determining task benchmarks and
developing good time-management skills. A promising
candidate has an expressed interest in foreign
affairs and/or gaining professional experience with
civic education programs. Prior office experience
preferred though not essential. Knowledge of Word,
Excel and Access is required. The Sales &
Fulfillment Department serves the members of the
Great Decisions Discussion Program—a
national network of community forums on foreign
policy in the United States. Under the
guidance of
the Sales Manager, the Research and Data Management
Assistant’s responsibilities will entail three key
components:
Research:
Examine current world events and follow news
developments related to the topics covered in the Great
Decisions briefing book. Assemble relevant news articles
for use in discussion groups and the department’s
archival files. Analyze sales data and assist in
generating department reports.
Writing &
Proofreading: Produce publication descriptions for
website. Draft correspondence to reader inquiries.
Proofread outgoing documents. Compile letter templates
for creation of department handbook.
Database
Management: Maintain records in promotional
database. Investigate promotional contacts for targeted
mailing lists. Update Congressional mailing list.
Produce monthly mail merge acknowledgement letters to
opinion ballot respondents.
Flexible on
schedule though the volunteer must be able to commit to
working 2 to 3 days per week (approximately 15 hours)
for a period of twelve weeks. Travel stipend is
available.
Professional
reference provided as needed upon successful completion
of placement.

The course "IN492
International Trade Practicum" travels every winter to a country to
observe its fashion industries. Recognized as the
Middle East's fashion business center, Israel's fashion style blends the
modern and the ancient worlds. In this trip, we will visit
shopping malls, apparel and jewelry factories, trade associations,
government agencies, and historical sites. This class is open to all
matriculated and non-matriculated students.
Learn how the Middle-East
Free Trade Agreement (MEFTA) and the US-Israel Free Trade Agreement are
impacting Israel’s apparel, textile, and fashion industries. Trip fee is
$2,950 plus 3 credits tuition. Trip fee includes: Airfare, Double Room,
Daily Continental Breakfast, and Sightseeing Tours.

Aggarwal Selected As First Recipient
FIT’s
Department of International Trade and Marketing for the
Fashion Industries (ITM) is pleased to announce that Ms.
Alpana Aggarwal has been selected as the winner
of the 2006 Gemini Shippers Scholarship, the first
recipient to ever receive such award. Alpana has had
extensive experience in the international fashion
industry, working as a Senior Merchandiser for Home
Fashions at ITC Ltd. as well as Mats International, both
export houses in India for three years prior to joining
ITM.
In her
application, Alpana expressed her desire to become a
strategist in international retail and eventually give
back to ITM.

Offers its first Educational Scholarship
2006 Gemini Shippers Association Scholarship
Through the fundraising efforts of the ITM Advisory
Board, Gemini Shippers Association has endowed, in
perpetuity, one scholarship to
cover $1,375.- per semester in educational expenses
for the Fall and Spring semesters. We are now accepting
applications for this scholarship for the Fall 2006 and
Spring 2007 terms.
This scholarship, the first of its kind for ITM
students, was generously endowed by Gemini Shippers
Association through the efforts of Ms. Sara Mayes,
its executive director and ITM Advisory Board member.
Through a total donation of $55,000 made in 2005, the fund will finance $1,375.- in
educational expenses per semester for one school year in
perpetuity. The scholarship is targeted to full-time ITM students with a strong scholastic record and visible
volunteer work at ITM, FIT, the industry and/or the
community. The recipient(s) will be announced every
spring semester preceding the school year that the
scholarship will take effect. Complete
application must be hand delivered in both hard copy and
CD forms to the
ITM Department Secretary at room B-429 no later than 3
p.m. Wednesday, March 15, 2006. The winner will be
announced here on April 17.

ITM Launches New Course
The new course IN342 International Corporate
Responsibility, written by Professor Shona Quinn,
will be introduced this semester as a major elective.
This class will examine the sustainability movement and
how ethical, social, and environmental issues are being
addressed by multinational corporations. Since the
course was approved late in December, it is not listed
in the semester bulletin, but it is open and a minimum
enrollment of 18 students is needed. It will run on
Wednesday, 6:20-9:10pm. CRN# 11601. Room TBA. |

ITM Students Conducted Research in Costa Rica
Seventeen students participated in the IN492
International Trade Practicum this winterim (January
2-22). The group spent two weeks in San Jose and a week
in the southern area Dominical, near Panama. Students
conducted research projects on Costa Rican politics and
history, CAFTA, consumer and merchandising styles,
fashion trends, and other topics. Students interviewed
business executives, labor leaders, politicians, fashion
buyers, real estate agents, and visited the Presidential
Palace and the U.S. embassy. The next practicum
is scheduled for January 2-22, 2007 and the
destination is Israel; students interested in
joining this field trip should see Professor Patrick
Yanez as soon as possible to reserve a place.
