Subject: Wireless Access on Campus
Information Technology has undertaken a Wireless Access Program at FIT. This initiative will provide and ensure an easy and secure method for accessing FITNet wireless hotspots from the library, the labs, common areas and more. Our first “quick hits” will be the library, the labs and several common areas such as the area between A and B buildings.
We are working with FITSA and Student Government, the Dorm Council and the Library and have invited the Faculty Association to participate in the recommendations for future access through the governance process and informally.
As part of this program all existing wireless access points on campus will be replaced with equipment provided by Information Technology that conforms to standards for secure access to FITNet. No other Wireless Access Points are permitted.
Open (unsecured) Wireless Access Points provide entry for data hijackers, entry points for computers with viruses to bypass our protections, access for hackers to launch attacks against us and other sites, and the ability for anyone on the street to utilize finite FIT resources.
Your input on this issue is welcome and should be sent to WAP@fitnyc.edu. In addition, you can check http://www3.fitnyc.edu/IT for a list of the wireless hot spots on campus as they are activated.
