THE PROGRAM
The FIT International Fashion Design in Milan program
provides a study abroad opportunity for BFA students to
study fashion design in both the U.S. and Italy. The
international dimension of the two-year program requires
that students reside in Milan for one year, studying in
English at the Politecnico di Milano (Polimi), and to reside
in New York City for the other year, studying at FIT.
Students may opt to study in Milan or NYC during either
their third or fourth year.
In these two international cities, students follow a
specialized program focusing on the unique dynamics that
characterize the differences and similarities between
European and American fashion.
In Italy, students have access to trade shows, cultural
events and field trips to Italian mills and factories. An
intense mandatory week of fashion study in an additional
European capital further broadens the students' perspective.
In the third year of the program in Milan students can
follow the Knitwear, Sportswear, or Children’s Wear
specializations of the Fashion Design BFA program. During
their fourth year in NYC, students complete their required
specialization courses along with most General Education
courses.
Only the Sportswear/Children’s Wear specializations are
offered in the fourth year of the Fashion Design BFA program
in Milan. The fourth year of the Knitwear specialization is
not offered. The program structure provides full academic
credit toward degree requirements.
The FIT International Programs Office will assist you in
applying to the program and preparing to live abroad --
helping you with housing, visas and a general orientation to
living in Italy.

"Moving
to Milano has changed my life. It was
the best decision I have ever made.
Living in Milan grants you direct
access to the rest of Italy as well as
the rest of the world, besides the fact
that Italy is one of the most beautiful
countries in the world. 10 Corso Como,
apertivo, and riding your bike along the
Navigli with a new pair of platforms in
your basket from the market is also a
plus."

"I had the
pleasure of studying in both Florence
and Milan under the FIT Study Abroad
Program. These experiences are once in a
lifetime (twice for me.) I cannot choose
my favorite part of the experience, but
I would say that it is somewhere
between, roaming the enchanting streets
of Italy with close friends, attending
exclusive industry tradeshows and art
exhibitions and having the freedom and
opportunities to explore Europe whenever
I wanted. My years abroad gave me a
freedom that I had not yet found in New
York. I was able to blossom as a person
and designer. I learned so much about
Italy and all of the many other
countries that I had only dreamed of
visiting as a child became routine
weekend excursions for me. I can only
describe my experiences as a dream. I
often call some of my closest friends,
who I met during my time abroad, just to
make sure that it really happened. I
learned Italian because I made the most
of my time in Italy and did not take it
for granted. My only advice would be if
you are able to make it in a far away
country for a full school year, apply!
Don’t expect it to be anything like New
York (because it’s NOT) and just take
every opportunity you get to explore,
learn and make new connections for the
future. I only wish I could do it
again!"

ADDITIONAL HOUSING
Italian universities are
organized differently from most international institutions. Italian campuses consist of academic and
administrative buildings as well as departments and
laboratories. Students' residences are not part of the
campus. All campuses of the Politecnico di Milano are
organized according to this model.
Although FIT in Milan cannot guarantee a
place in any one specific residence halls, the FIT in Milan
office will offer assistance in this process and offer
assistance with finding information and resources for
private apartments. The Erasmus student network at the
Politecnico di Milano
can also assist with non-profit resources and lease
checking. Students are responsible for their own private
housing bookings, deadlines and payments.
[A brochure will be posted here
with detailed
information]
Students may also decide to choose to live in
privately rented housing. To this extent, you can contact
WebCasa. It is a
service offered by University Lab, a Politecnico student
association. They collect private announcements for
rooms/flats and help students to access this kind of
information. |
