Highlights of the Illustration Program

  • FIT’s award-winning Illustration faculty is comprised  exclusively of professionals who have achieved a minimum of ten years successful industry experience.

  • In recent years, FIT Illustration students have won more than fifty awards from numerous competitive student art exhibitions, including the prestigious Society of Illustrators Annual Scholarship Competition.

  • In addition to focusing on creative skills, FIT prepares  students for successful careers in the competitive graphic arts business.

  • FIT infuses every major with a comprehensive liberal arts education, providing our students with a global perspective, the capability to communicate effectively, and critical thinking skills.

  • The Illustration department at FIT, with 400 students and  44 faculty members, is one of the most dynamic of its kind in the country.

  • FIT’s Illustration program has no required multi-year foundation component; rather it immerses students immediately in their discipline the first semester.

  • Remaining relevant to the world of business is at the heart of the college’s mission, with its programs evolves and adapting apace with industry. In recent years, 19 new courses have been added to the Illustration curriculum.

  • The program employs traditional drawing, painting and conceptualization skills that are fully integrated with an extensive nine-course digital education, encompassing type, design, photography, and animation using industry-level computer facilities .

  • The AAS program provides students with the choice of either a general or a fashion illustration option.

  • In addition to the baccalaureate-level program, Illustration AAS graduates may choose to apply to other related FIT upper-division majors including Toy Design, and Computers Animation and Interactive Media.

  • As an example of its commitment to professional preparation for industry, FIT launched the a Master of Arts degree program in Illustration, in fall 2005.

  • FIT’s location in New York City, one of the world’s largest graphic arts centers, is a significant educational and professional asset for students, providing easy access to diverse museums, libraries, galleries, and business opportunities.
