The Department of the History of Art offers more than thirty courses supporting both our new Bachelors program in Visual Art Management and the needs of FIT's other majors.

The department's strength lies principally in our faculty members and their expertise in the classroom. Their individual research includes subjects such as Renaissance and Baroque patronage, Victorian art, Abstract Expressionism, Holocaust imagery, Islamic art and architecture, archeology of the ancient Middle East, modern sculpture, early twentieth-century American art, the history of dress, Native and Latin American art, etc.

The department has adopted a broad approach to teaching, enabling our students to study art as interdisciplinary and contextual in character both in the classroom and online. Our courses are intended to foster an understanding of the meaning and use of art within its historical moment, and to explore its relationship to other disciplines. We have attracted national recognition as a leader in new technologies for teaching.
