We Have Talent Over Talent in the Health and Physical Education Department
Dr. Lawrence Galante, Ph.D., D.Hom.We always knew that the Health and Phys. Ed. Department at FIT had some really talented professors, but we never suspected we had talent over talent.

We’re referring to Dr. Lawrence Galante, Ph.D., D.Hom., who has a doctorate in Health Science & Homeopathic Medicine. When he is not teaching at FIT, he is the director of The Center for Holistic Arts, where he sees clients, employing various holistic therapies. At the Graduate Center of City College, he teaches courses in Homeopathic Medicine, Hypnosis, Reiki, and Chi Kung. He teaches regularly in Europe where he has quite a following.

We already knew that he is a Master of Tai Chi and Kung Fu, which he has studied for over 40 years and which he teaches right here at FIT. But did you know that he is the author of two books, and that he taught for many years at NYU and at Hofstra University where he introduced these same two courses to their college programs way before anyone in these parts knew what Tai Chi was?

But surprise, surprise, Dr. G. has more talent still. In December of 2006, he wowed the Toys for Tots Concert, put on by the Italian American Club, with his classically trained operatic voice, performing three classical Italian songs on the stage of the FIT auditorium. You probably heard of the most famous of the songs, O Sole Mio. Elvis Presley recorded an English version of it called It’s Now or Never. And Professor Galante belted out two other classical Italian favorites as well, Caro Mio Ben and Non Ti Scordar di Me.

How did this concert happen? Last year, Dr. G. gave a lecture on Italian tenors for the Italian American Club at FIT. After that, Professor Joseph Maiorca, the club’s faculty advisor, asked him to sing at the children’s benefit concert. At first he refused, but eventually Prof. Maiorca’s persuasive powers won out, and the concert was a tremendous success.

Bravo Professore!
