Kress Foundation. CONSERVATION GRANTS
Support the professional practice of art conservation, especially as it relates to European art of the pre-modern era. Grants are awarded to projects that create and disseminate specialized knowledge, including archival projects, development and dissemination of scholarly databases, documentation projects, exhibitions and publications focusing on art conservation, scholarly publications, and technical and scientific studies. Also funds the travel of experts to professional symposia or conferences. Maximum Award: $30,000. Deadlines: April 15.
• CONSERVATION FELLOWSHIPS - Provide one-year internships in advanced fine arts conservation at a museum or conservation research facility. Restricted to individuals who have completed a Masters degree in art conservation. Award: $30,000. Deadline: March 1.
• RESPONSIVE FELLOWSHIPS – Awarded to art historians and art conservators in the final stages of their preparation for professional careers, as well as to art museum curators and educators. For projects that advance the mission of the Foundation. Award: Varies. Deadline: Open.

National Endowment for the Arts. HERITAGE/PRESERVATION
Funds presentations that reflect and increase the public's appreciation for our diverse cultural traditions; forms of instruction that pass artistic repertoire, techniques, and traditions on to future generations; and the documentation or conservation of significant works or collections of art, artifacts or designed elements, or of cultural traditions or practices. Application must be made through an institution. Deadline: August 13.

Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in Fine Arts.
CARTER MANNY AWARD - Provides funding for academic dissertations whose focus is on areas directly concerned with architecture, and with other arts that contribute to architecture. Areas supported include architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, architectural technologies, architectural research, architectural history and theory, urban design and planning, and, in some circumstances, the fine arts in relation to architectural topics. Award: $15,000. Deadline: March 15.


International Furniture and Design Association Education Foundation. IRMA DOBKIN UNIVERSAL DESIGN GRANT - Awarded to an individual working independently and involved with universal design in one of the following areas: product development, design project, education (e.g. an individual developing a curriculum, arranging a symposium, establishing a program or department, or writing a textbook/resource guide on the subject), or marketing (e.g. the promotion and/or dissemination of universal design information). Award: $1,500. Deadline: June 30.
    • TONY TORRICE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GRANT - Awarded to a professional working in the interior furnishing industry who wants to advance his or her professional development and career through independent or academic study. An applicant may work in, but is not limited to, the areas of design, marketing, education, writing/publishing, retailing, or manufacturing. Award: $1,000. Deadline: June 30.
    • NEW! ELIZABETH BROWN GRANT FOR INTERIOR DESIGN PROGRAMS - For supplementary design program materials, such as books, periodicals, audio-visual aids, computer software, or other needed resources. Award: $1,000. Deadline: June 30.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology. POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP FOR RESEARCH IN ISLAMIC ARCHITECTURE - For scholars with a Ph.D. in any field related to architecture, including architectural and urban history, design, technology, computation, urban planning, anthropology, and archaeology, who are engaged in research on an Islamic topic. Fellowships are up to nine months. Award: $3,100 per month. Deadline: March 1. 

New York State Council on the Arts. ARCHITECTURE, PLANNING AND DESIGN Promotes excellence in design and planning in the public realm for the benefit of all New Yorkers. Funds institutions and individuals to support the evolution of the design arts in the following fields: architecture (contemporary and restoration), landscape architecture, urban and rural planning, urban design, historic preservation, graphic and industrial design, and architectural theory and history. New and innovative solutions to design problems in all areas of funding are sought. Maximum Award: $10,000. Must be registered with NYSCA by January 22. Deadlines: February 17, April 12.

NEW! Oklahoma State University, Department of Design, Housing, and Merchandising (DHM) Digital Gallery. THE ART OF APPLIED DESIGN - An international juried competition. All submitted works must be functional objects commonly used within interior spaces, such as furnishings (hard or soft), utensils, fixtures, or containers. Objects must have been created between 2007 and 2010, and anything that is purely decorative is not eligible. Evaluation will be based upon uniqueness and creativity, craftsmanship, and quality of the submitted digital image. Designers 18 years and above working in fiber, clay, wood, metal or glass, and plastic are eligible. Best of Show Recognition Awards given in five media categories. Deadline: July 15.

Digital Arts


Experimental Television Center, Ltd. FINISHING FUNDS
Provides support to New York State artists at all career levels, for the completion of works of moving-image and sonic art including: audio, film, video, digital, and Web-based forms. Maximum Award: $2,000. Deadline: March 15.
    •PRESENTATION FUNDS - Encourage events for independent media work by providing grants to not-for-profit organizations. Support is available for personal presentations by independent electronic media and film artists. Events must be open to the public; courses, classes and workshops with limited enrollments are not eligible. Publicly supported educational institutions are not eligible. Award: $1,000. Deadline: Open.
   • MEDIA ARTS TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE FUND - Designed to help non profit media arts programs in the State strengthen organizational capacity, and address systemic issues within institutions and within the field. The program supports organizational development and the building of critical skills to insure the vitality and longevity of the field, through the hiring of consultants or other professionals, staff attendance at professional conferences and meetings, and networking opportunities around the State. Award: $4,000. Deadlines: April 1, July 1.

Franklin Furnace Archive, Inc. FRANKLIN FURNACE FUND
Awards grants to emerging artists, allowing them to produce major works in New York. Works may engage the Internet as an art medium and/or venue. Maximum Award: $10,000. Deadline: April 1.

The National Association of Latino Arts and Culture (NALAC). FUND FOR THE ARTS - Dedicated to the preservation, development and promotion of the cultural and artistic expressions of the diverse Latino populations of the U.S. Latino artists may apply for support for professional or career development, or for the creation, development and presentation of work. Maximum Award: $10,000. Deadline: July 16.
    • NEW! MASTER ARTISTS GRANT - Recognizes an established Latino artist for his/her work in the community and provides support that enables the Master Artist to serve as a mentor to another artist in the community. For established artists with at least ten years working in his/her artistic capacity. Award: $20,000. Deadline: July 16.

National Science Foundation. SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING VISUALIZATION CHALLENGE- To recognize and encourage visualization in the communication of science. Winners will be published in a special section of the September issue of the journal Science and Science Online. Awards are made in five categories: Photography: Film or digital photographs and photomicrographs, as well as images obtained from electron microscopes, STM's, AFM's, telescopes and similar instruments; Illustration: Traditional or computer-assisted illustrations and drawings produced to conceptualize the unseen or recreate an object, process or phenomenon. Informational Graphics: Computer-assisted illustrations or graphics produced to instruct/interpret highly technical information into art that teaches. Interactive Media and Non-Interactive Media: Movies or animations that play automatically. Eligible entries must be produced or commissioned by illustrators, scientists, engineers, research groups or institutions. Deadline: May 29.

New York State Council on the Arts. INDIVIDUAL ARTISTS’ PROGRAM
Support for the creation of new work by New York State artists through artist-initiated projects in electronic media (video, sound art, installations, and new technologies) and film production, and the commissioning of new works by composers and theatre artists. The application must be submitted by a nonprofit Sponsoring Organization on behalf of the artist. Maximum Award: $25,000. Must be registered with NYSCA by January 22. Deadline: April 22.

Artists from culturally diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Award: $1,200; on-campus housing; studio space; up to $500 for travel; up to $500 for materials; and up to $100 for shipping completed work. Deadline: March 1.
    •SENIOR RESIDENCY - Allows mid-career artists six weeks to pursue a focused project in a stimulating environment. Award: $750; on campus housing and studio space; up to $500 for travel; up to $200 for materials; and up to $100 for shipping completed work. Deadline: March 1.

Pollock-Krasner Foundation.
Awards grants to painters, sculptors, and other artists who work on paper, including printmakers. The Foundation’s dual criteria are artistic merit and financial need. Award: $1,000 - $30,000. Deadline: Open.

The Studio Museum in Harlem.
Serves emerging African-American artists and artists of African descent internationally. Artists’ media may include sculpture, painting, printmaking, digital art, mixed media, photography, and film and video. Artists receive a $20,000 fellowship, studio space, and a $1,000 materials stipend for a period of twelve months. Deadline: April 1.

Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. BARBARA KARLIN GRANT
Recognizes and encourages the work of aspiring picture book writers; this grant is available to members of SCBWI who have never had a picture book published. It is not available for picture book texts on which there is already a contract. The text may be an original story, work of non-fiction, or a re-telling or adaptation of a fairytale, folktale or legend. Award: $500 and $1,500. Deadline: March 15.

Public Art


NEW! The Downtown Partnership of Colorado Springs (CO).
12TH ANNUAL ART ON THE STREETS - An outdoor art show and year-long exhibition from June 2010 to May 2011 in downtown Colorado Springs. All types of public art suitable for outdoor display are highly encouraged, with a wide range of artistic expression, varied talent and cultural context as primary objectives. Large-scale, outside the box, can’t be missed pieces are encouraged. Award: $25,000, $7,500, $2,500 plus $400 installation assistance and one night lodging per artist at opening reception. Deadline: March 1.

NEW! Public Art Fund (PAF). IN THE PUBLIC REALM
Designed to champion innovative public art projects by New York-based emerging artists. Artists selected will develop proposals, consult with PAF to shape their project, and ultimately realize their work in one of NYC’s five boroughs. Previous experience working in public spaces is not necessary. Award: $1,000 each for ten artists to develop a submission. Submission Deadline: February 16. Final Proposal Award: $15,000 fabrication and installation, $2,500 artist fee for up to three artists to realize their artwork. Final Proposal: May 1.

NEW! Sculptors Dominion International, Inc. (San Antonio, TX) THE SCULPTORS INVITATIONAL - An annual exhibit for big outdoor sculpture at the Villa del Carmen Sculpture Conservatory in San Antonio, Texas, April 3-25, 2010. The venue is six landscaped acres, oak trees, grass, all secured and gated in a residential setting and inside the city limits. Presentation of outdoor sculptures are aesthetic, spacious and with integrity. Classical figurative to abstract, bronze to marble are accepted. Deadline: March 1.

Capelli d'Angeli Foundation.
For women artists who are in treatment or are survivors of cancer at any stage and creating art in the form of painting, sculpture, photography, and mixed media.. Award: $500. Deadline: Open.

Money for Women/Barbara Deming Memorial Fund.
Provides small grants to individual feminists active in the visual arts, fiction, poetry, or nonfiction. American Institute of Physics. SCIENCE WRITING AWARD
Awarded for excellence in Science Writing in Physics and Astronomy for the non-specialist in four categories: journalist, scientist, science writing for children, and broadcast media. American Studies Association. JOHN HOPE FRANKLIN PUBLICATION PRIZE

Sherwood Anderson Foundation. FICTION AWARD

NEW! Association for Asian Studies. JOSEPH LEVENSON PRIZES
For nonfiction scholarly books on China published in 2009. Books must be in English and contribute to increased understanding of the history, culture, society, politics, or economy of China. Works in all disciplines and in all periods of Chinese history are eligible, but anthologies, edited works, and pamphlets will not be considered. Two awards are offered, one for works whose main focus is on China before 1900 and the other for works on post-1900 China. Award: $1,000. Deadline: June 30.

The Association of Writers & Writing Programs. AWP AWARD SERIES

History of Science Society. WATSON DAVIS AND HELEN MILES DAVIS PRIZE - For books on the history of science directed to a wide public (including undergraduate instruction). The book should introduce an entire field, a chronological period, a national tradition, or the work of a noteworthy individual. Books published during the three years prior to the award date are eligible for nomination. Award: $1,000. All Deadlines: April 1.
    •PFIZER AWARD - Recognizes an outstanding published book on the history of science in the past three years. Award: $2,500.
    •THE MARGARET W. ROSSITER HISTORY OF WOMEN IN SCIENCE PRIZE - For an outstanding book (or, in even-numbered years, an article) on the history of women in science. The writing may take a biographical, institutional, theoretical, or other approach to the topic, which may include discussions of women's activities in science, analyses of past scientific practices that deal explicitly with gender, and investigations regarding women as viewed by scientists. These may relate to medicine, technology, and the social sciences as well as the natural sciences. Award: $1,000.

J.M. Kaplan Fund. FURTHERMORE GRANTS IN PUBLISHING
For nonfiction book publishing about the city; natural and historic resources; art, architecture, and design; cultural history; and civil liberties and other public issues of the day. Grants apply to writing, research, editing, design, indexing, photography, illustration, and printing and binding. Application must be through a non-profit, academic institution, independent and university presses, and professional societies. Award: $500 - $15,000. Deadlines: March 15, September 15.

Lyon College. VISITING FELLOWSHIP IN CREATIVE WRITING
Provides a six-week residency for a distinguished writer of creative nonfiction. Eligible candidates should have an MFA or MA degree (not necessarily in creative writing), significant publication in prestigious literary journals or magazines, at least one book of creative nonfiction published, and appropriate teaching experience. Candidates without all of these credentials who believe they are nevertheless qualified should also apply. Award: $5,000 plus campus housing, meals, and $350 for travel. Deadline: April 1.

Modern Language Association of America. PRIZES AND AWARDS
For recently published books, scholarly articles or studies. Some of the topics are: teaching foreign languages and literature; Latin American and Spanish literatures and cultures; French or francophone linguistic or literary studies; Italian literature or comparative literature involving Italian; teaching English language, literature, rhetoric, and composition. Studies dealing with literary theory, media, cultural history, and interdisciplinary topics are also eligible. Maximum Award: $2,000. Deadlines: March 1, April 1, May 1.

National Endowment for the Arts. CREATIVE WRITING
Through fellowships to published creative writers of exceptional talent in the areas of prose and poetry, the Endowment enables published writers to set aside time for writing, research, travel, and general career advancement. This program operates on a two-year cycle with poetry fellowships this year, and fiction and creative non-fiction fellowships available next year. Award: $25,000. Deadline: March 4.

National Press Foundation. EVERT CLARK/SETH PAYNE AWARD
For young science writers age thirty or younger reporting in all fields of science including, but not limited to, writing in the biological, physical, environmental, computer, and space sciences, along with technology, mathematics, health, and science policy. The award is limited to non-technical, print journalism only. Articles published in newspapers (including college newspapers), magazines, and newsletters are eligible. Any story printed between June 30, 2009 and June 30, 2010 will be eligible. Award: $1,000. Deadline: June 30.

NEW! The Pinch. LITERARY AWARDS IN FICTION AND POETRY
University of Memphis Literary Journal provides awards for the best fiction and the best poetry. Winners will be published in the spring issue. Award: $1,500. Deadline: March 15.

Poetry Center at Passaic County Community College
The Center has been accorded international recognition for many of its activities including the Allen Ginsberg Poetry Awards.
    •ALLEN GINSBERG POETRY AWARDS - For poetry honoring Allen Ginsberg's contribution to American literature. The winning poems and all honorable mention winners as well as editor's choice poems will be published in "The Paterson Literary Review." Awards: First prize: $1,000, second prize: $200, and third prize: $100. Deadline: April 1.
    •PATERSON PRIZE FOR BOOKS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE - For the best book for young people published in 2008. One award will be made in each of three categories: Pre-K through grade three; grades four to six; and grades seven to twelve. Award: $500. Deadline: March 15.
    • PATERSON FICTION PRIZE - For a novel or collection of short fiction published in 2008. Award: $1,000. Deadline: April 1.

NEW! Sarah Lawrence College. CAMPBELL CORNER POETRY PRIZE
For the best entry in a poetry contest. The winning entries will be published on the College’s Language Exchange website. Poems that treat larger themes with lyric intensity are especially welcome. Previously published work is accepted. Award: $3,000. Deadline: March15.

Snake Nation Press. VIOLET REED HAAS PRIZE FOR POETRY

LUSH TRIUMPHANT LITERARY AWARDS COMPETITION - Literary magazine published three times a year includes a fusion of fiction, poetry, photography and graphic illustration from rising Canadian, U.S. & International writers and artists. Teachers and Writers Collaborative. THE BECHTEL PRIZE
For an exemplary article or essay relating to creative writing education, literary studies, and/or the profession of writing. Possible topics include contemporary issues in classroom teaching; innovative approaches to teaching literary forms and genres; and the intersection between literature and imaginative writing. Award: $3,500 and publication in a special issue of the magazine. Deadline: June 30.

University of Pittsburgh Press. AGNES LYNCH STARRETT POETRY PRIZE
Award and publication for a first full-length book of poems. Award: $5,000. Deadline: April 30.
    • DRUE HEINZ LITERATURE PRIZE - Award and publication for a collection of short fiction. Open to writers who have published a book-length collection of fiction or at least three short stories or novellas in commercial magazines or literary journals. Award: $15,000. Deadline: June 30.

University of Tulsa. NIMROD/HARDMAN WRITING AWARDS
Presented to writers and poets for either a poem or work of short fiction. Cash awards plus publication are given to first and second prizewinners. No previously published works or works accepted for publication elsewhere are eligible. Awards: $2,000, $1,000. Deadline: April 30.

Wilkes University. JAMES JONES FIRST NOVEL FELLOWSHIP
Awards an American author of a first novel-in-progress. Novellas and collections of closely linked short stories may also be considered for the competition. Award: $10,000. Deadline: March 1.

Williams College, John William Miller Fellowship Fund. ESSAY PRIZES
For essays of high quality published in a recognized journal on some aspect of Miller's work. Award: $5,000. Deadline: Open.

Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing.
ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE FELLOWSHIPS - For unpublished new writers working on a first book of poetry or fiction to spend an academic year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Eligible applicants must have completed an M.F.A. or Ph.D. in creative writing. Award: $27,000. Deadline: February 28.

Jerome Foundation.
Supports exhibitions, fellowships, production grants, and workshops for emerging artists in: arts criticism, dance, film/video, media arts, literature, music, theater/performance art, visual arts, and multi-disciplinary work. Individuals may apply for the New York City Media Arts production grants. Otherwise, the Foundation prefers to fund organizations which offer stipends to artists for their participation, and which provide documentation and analysis of the work. Grant amounts vary. Land of Odds (Nashville, TN). EIGHTH ANNUAL UGLY NECKLACE CONTEST - A jewelry design competition judged on the hideousness of the necklace and how well the artist has shown an understanding of good design principles (and how to violate them) to achieve this "Ugly" end, and the quality of the accompanying poem. The top ten semi-finalists’ pieces will be displayed from May-September. First prize of a $992.93 shopping spree on the Land of Odds web-site and a Runner-Up prize of a $399.07 web-site shopping spree. Deadline: March 15.

National Endowment for the Arts. CREATIVITY
For the creation and refinement, and presentation of artistic work, as well as artistic training programs. Funds may support commissions, residencies, rehearsals, workshops, collaborations with artists from other countries, exhibition, or publication of artistic works of all cultures and periods (literature projects must focus on contemporary writers). Applications must be made through an institution. Maximum Award: $150,000. Deadline: March 1.

Woman Made Gallery (Chicago, IL). CATEGORY: PRINTMAKING

Institutional Grants

The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation. PHOTOGRAPHY
Supports museums and other public institutions by assisting in the creation or expansion of photography departments: emphasis is on permanence, that is, the acquisition of photographs or the support for study and exhibition facilities. Support is also available for important exhibitions which ideally will be accompanied by quality catalogues, books, or other documents to insure their place as reference resources for the future documentation of photography as a fine art. Award: Varies. Deadline: Open.

National Endowment for the Arts.
Most grant awards range from $5,000 to $100,000, and all require a match of at least 1 to 1.
    • CREATIVITY - See Exhibitions.
    • SERVICES TO ARTS ORGANIZATIONS AND ARTISTS – For local arts agencies, service organizations, and others whose primary purpose is to assist organizations or artists in administrative, developmental, technical, and related areas. Projects may include workshops, conferences, or publications that provide professional development, networks, and other services to arts organizations or artists, training and professional development in arts administration, the development of new or adaptation of existing technology to improve the operation of arts organizations’ impact, or to enhance the experience of audience members with special needs. Award: $5,000 - $150,000. Deadline: March 12, August 13.
    • CHALLENGE AMERICA: REACHING EVERY COMMUNITY FAST-TRACK REVIEW GRANTS - Offers support primarily to small and mid-sized organizations for projects that extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations, those whose opportunities to experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics, or disability. Award: $10,000. Deadline: May 28.

The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc.
Awards grants on a project basis to curatorial programs to assist in the innovative and scholarly presentation of contemporary visual arts. Projects may include exhibitions, catalogues and other organizational activities. The work of choreographers and performing artists is occasionally funded when the visual arts are an inherent element of a production. Awards: $5,000 - $50,000. All Deadlines: March 1, September 1.
    • THE WYNN KRAMARSKY FREEDOM OF ARTISTIC EXPRESSION AWARD - Supports efforts to strengthen freedom of artistic expression and equitable access to resources and recognizes the work of organizations with a deep-seated commitment to preserving and defending the First Amendment rights of artists. The grant rewards outstanding advocacy, legal, and curatorial efforts on behalf of those whose rights to free expression have been challenged.
    • CURATORIAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS – Support scholarly research to develop significant exhibitions. Institutionally-affiliated curators at any stage of their careers are eligible to apply. Research must be part of a potential exhibition and curators must have the formal support of their director. Grants to curators do not preclude separate proposals from sponsoring institutions.
