CONSERVATION GRANTS
Support the professional practice of art conservation,
especially as it relates to European art of the pre-modern
era. Grants are awarded to projects that create and
disseminate specialized knowledge, including archival
projects, development and dissemination of scholarly
databases, documentation projects, exhibitions and
publications focusing on art conservation, scholarly
publications, and technical and scientific studies. Also
funds the travel of experts to professional symposia or
conferences. Maximum Award: $30,000. Deadlines: April 15.
• CONSERVATION FELLOWSHIPS - Provide one-year internships in
advanced fine arts conservation at a museum or conservation
research facility. Restricted to individuals who have
completed a Masters degree in art conservation. Award:
$30,000. Deadline: March 1.
• RESPONSIVE FELLOWSHIPS – Awarded to art historians and art
conservators in the final stages of their preparation for
professional careers, as well as to art museum curators and
educators. For projects that advance the mission of the
Foundation. Award: Varies. Deadline: Open.
National Endowment for the Arts.
HERITAGE/PRESERVATION
Funds presentations that reflect and increase the public's
appreciation for our diverse cultural traditions; forms of
instruction that pass artistic repertoire, techniques, and
traditions on to future generations; and the documentation
or conservation of significant works or collections of art,
artifacts or designed elements, or of cultural traditions or
practices. Application must be made through an institution.

Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in Fine Arts.
CARTER MANNY AWARD - Provides funding for academic
dissertations whose focus is on areas directly concerned
with architecture, and with other arts that contribute to
architecture. Areas supported include architecture,
landscape architecture, interior design, architectural
technologies, architectural research, architectural history
and theory, urban design and planning, and, in some
circumstances, the fine arts in relation to architectural
topics. Award: $15,000. Deadline: March 15.
International Furniture and Design
Association Education Foundation.
IRMA DOBKIN
UNIVERSAL DESIGN GRANT - Awarded to an individual working
independently and involved with universal design in one of
the following areas: product development, design project,
education (e.g. an individual developing a curriculum,
arranging a symposium, establishing a program or department,
or writing a textbook/resource guide on the subject), or
marketing (e.g. the promotion and/or dissemination of
universal design information). Award: $1,500. Deadline: June
30.
• TONY TORRICE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GRANT - Awarded to a
professional working in the interior furnishing industry who
wants to advance his or her professional development and
career through independent or academic study. An applicant
may work in, but is not limited to, the areas of design,
marketing, education, writing/publishing, retailing, or
manufacturing. Award: $1,000. Deadline: June 30.
• NEW! ELIZABETH BROWN GRANT FOR INTERIOR DESIGN PROGRAMS -
For supplementary design program materials, such as books,
periodicals, audio-visual aids, computer software, or other

Massachusetts Institute of
Technology. POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP FOR RESEARCH
IN ISLAMIC ARCHITECTURE - For scholars with a Ph.D. in any
field related to architecture, including architectural and
urban history, design, technology, computation, urban
planning, anthropology, and archaeology, who are engaged in
research on an Islamic topic. Fellowships are up to nine
months. Award: $3,100 per month. Deadline: March 1.

ARCHITECTURE, PLANNING AND DESIGN Promotes excellence in
design and planning in the public realm for the benefit of
all New Yorkers. Funds institutions and individuals to
support the evolution of the design arts in the following
fields: architecture (contemporary and restoration),
landscape architecture, urban and rural planning, urban
design, historic preservation, graphic and industrial
design, and architectural theory and history. New and
innovative solutions to design problems in all areas of
funding are sought. Maximum Award: $10,000. Must be
registered with NYSCA by January 22. Deadlines: February 17,

Department of Design, Housing, and Merchandising (DHM)
Digital Gallery. THE ART OF APPLIED DESIGN -
An international juried competition. All submitted works
must be functional objects commonly used within interior
spaces, such as furnishings (hard or soft), utensils,
fixtures, or containers. Objects must have been created
between 2007 and 2010, and anything that is purely
decorative is not eligible. Evaluation will be based upon
uniqueness and creativity, craftsmanship, and quality of the
submitted digital image. Designers 18 years and above
working in fiber, clay, wood, metal or glass, and plastic
are eligible. Best of Show Recognition Awards given in five
media categories. Deadline: July 15.

Experimental Television Center, Ltd.
FINISHING FUNDS
Provides support to New York State artists at all career
levels, for the completion of works of
moving-image and sonic art including: audio, film, video,
digital, and Web-based forms. Maximum Award: $2,000.
Deadline: March 15.
•PRESENTATION FUNDS - Encourage events for independent media
work by providing grants to not-for-profit organizations.
Support is available for personal presentations by
independent electronic media and film artists. Events must
be open to the public; courses, classes and workshops with
limited enrollments are not eligible. Publicly supported
educational institutions are not eligible. Award: $1,000.

• MEDIA ARTS TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE FUND - Designed to help non
profit media arts programs in the State strengthen
organizational capacity, and address systemic issues within
institutions and within the field. The program supports
organizational development and the building of critical
skills to insure the vitality and longevity of the field,
through the hiring of consultants or other professionals,
staff attendance at professional conferences and meetings,
and networking opportunities around the State. Award:
$4,000. Deadlines: April 1, July 1.
Franklin Furnace Archive, Inc.
FRANKLIN FURNACE FUND
Awards grants to emerging artists, allowing them to produce
major works in New York. Works may engage the Internet as an
art medium and/or venue. Maximum Award: $10,000.

The National Association of Latino
Arts and Culture (NALAC). FUND FOR THE ARTS -
Dedicated to the preservation, development and promotion of
the cultural and artistic expressions of the diverse Latino
populations of the U.S. Latino artists may apply for support
for professional or career development, or for the creation,
development and presentation of work. Maximum Award:
$10,000. Deadline: July 16.
• NEW! MASTER ARTISTS GRANT - Recognizes an established
Latino artist for his/her work in the community and provides
support that enables the Master Artist to serve as a mentor
to another artist in the community. For established artists
with at least ten years working in his/her artistic
capacity. Award: $20,000. Deadline: July 16.
National Science Foundation.
SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING VISUALIZATION CHALLENGE- To
recognize and encourage visualization in the communication
of science. Winners will be published in a special section
of the September issue of the journal Science and Science
Online. Awards are made in five categories: Photography:
Film or digital photographs and photomicrographs, as well as
images obtained from electron microscopes, STM's, AFM's,
telescopes and similar instruments; Illustration:
Traditional or computer-assisted illustrations and drawings
produced to conceptualize the unseen or recreate an object,
process or phenomenon. Informational Graphics:
Computer-assisted illustrations or graphics produced to
instruct/interpret highly technical information into art
that teaches. Interactive Media and Non-Interactive Media:
Movies or animations that play automatically. Eligible
entries must be produced or commissioned by illustrators,
scientists, engineers, research groups or institutions.

INDIVIDUAL ARTISTS’ PROGRAM
Support for the creation of new work by New York State
artists through artist-initiated projects in electronic
media (video, sound art, installations, and new
technologies) and film production, and the commissioning of
new works by composers and theatre artists. The application
must be submitted by a nonprofit Sponsoring Organization on
behalf of the artist. Maximum Award: $25,000. Must be
registered with NYSCA by January 22. Deadline: April 22.

Awards grants to painters, sculptors, and other artists who
work on paper, including printmakers. The Foundation’s dual

Harlem.
Serves emerging African-American artists and artists of
African descent internationally. Artists’ media may include
sculpture, painting, printmaking, digital art, mixed media,

re-telling or adaptation of a fairytale, folktale or legend.

The Downtown Partnership of Colorado
Springs (CO).
12TH ANNUAL ART ON THE STREETS -
An outdoor art show and year-long exhibition from June
2010 to May 2011 in downtown Colorado Springs. All types of
public art suitable for outdoor display are highly
encouraged, with a wide range of artistic expression, varied
talent and cultural context as primary objectives.
Large-scale, outside the box, can’t be missed pieces are
encouraged. Award: $25,000, $7,500, $2,500 plus $400
installation assistance and one night lodging per artist at
opening reception. Deadline: March 1.

Public Art Fund (PAF).
IN THE PUBLIC REALM
Designed to champion innovative public art projects by New
York-based emerging artists. Artists selected will develop
proposals, consult with PAF to shape their project, and
ultimately realize their work in one of NYC’s five boroughs.
Previous experience working in public spaces is not
necessary. Award: $1,000 each for ten artists to develop a
submission. Submission Deadline: February 16. Final Proposal
Award: $15,000 fabrication and installation, $2,500 artist
fee for up to three artists to realize their artwork.

THE SCULPTORS INVITATIONAL - An annual exhibit
for big outdoor sculpture at the Villa del Carmen Sculpture

and gated in a residential setting and inside the city
limits. Presentation of outdoor sculptures are aesthetic,

WATSON DAVIS AND HELEN MILES
DAVIS PRIZE -
For books on the history of science directed to a wide
public (including undergraduate instruction). The book
should introduce an entire field, a chronological period, a

Books published during the three years prior to the award
date are eligible for nomination. Award: $1,000. All

•PFIZER AWARD - Recognizes an outstanding published book on
the history of science in the past three years. Award:

•THE MARGARET W. ROSSITER HISTORY OF WOMEN IN SCIENCE PRIZE
- For an outstanding book (or, in even-numbered years, an
article) on the history of women in science. The writing may
take a biographical, institutional, theoretical, or other
approach to the topic, which may include discussions of
women's activities in science, analyses of past scientific
practices that deal explicitly with gender, and
investigations regarding women as viewed by scientists.
These may relate to medicine, technology, and the social
sciences as well as the natural sciences. Award: $1,000.
J.M. Kaplan Fund.
FURTHERMORE GRANTS IN PUBLISHING
For nonfiction book publishing about the city; natural and
historic resources; art, architecture, and design; cultural
history; and civil liberties and other public issues of the
day. Grants apply to writing, research, editing, design,
indexing, photography, illustration, and printing and
binding. Application must be through a non-profit, academic
institution, independent and university presses, and
professional societies. Award: $500 - $15,000. Deadlines:
March 15, September 15.

VISITING FELLOWSHIP IN CREATIVE WRITING
Provides a six-week residency for a distinguished writer of
creative nonfiction. Eligible candidates should have an MFA
or MA degree (not necessarily in creative writing),
significant publication in prestigious literary journals or
magazines, at least one book of creative nonfiction
published, and appropriate teaching experience. Candidates
without all of these credentials who believe they are
nevertheless qualified should also apply. Award: $5,000 plus
campus housing, meals, and $350 for travel. Deadline:

Modern Language Association of America. PRIZES AND AWARDS
For recently published books, scholarly articles or studies.
Some of the topics are: teaching foreign languages and
literature; Latin American and Spanish literatures and
cultures; French or francophone linguistic or literary
studies; Italian literature or comparative literature
involving Italian; teaching English language, literature,
rhetoric, and composition. Studies dealing with literary
theory, media, cultural history, and interdisciplinary
topics are also eligible. Maximum Award: $2,000.

CREATIVE WRITING
Through fellowships to published creative writers of
exceptional talent in the areas of prose and poetry, the
Endowment enables published writers to set aside time for
writing, research, travel, and general career advancement.
This program operates on a two-year cycle with poetry
fellowships this year, and fiction and creative non-fiction
fellowships available next year. Award: $25,000.

EVERT CLARK/SETH PAYNE AWARD
For young science writers age thirty or younger reporting in
all fields of science including, but not limited to, writing
in the biological, physical, environmental, computer, and
space sciences, along with technology, mathematics, health,
and science policy. The award is limited to non-technical,
print journalism only. Articles published in newspapers
(including college newspapers), magazines, and newsletters
are eligible. Any story printed between June 30, 2009 and
June 30, 2010 will be eligible. Award: $1,000. Deadline:

The Pinch. LITERARY AWARDS IN FICTION AND POETRY
University of Memphis Literary Journal provides awards for
the best fiction and the best poetry. Winners will be

Poetry Center at Passaic County Community College
The Center has been accorded international recognition for
many of its activities including the Allen Ginsberg Poetry
Awards.
•ALLEN GINSBERG POETRY AWARDS - For poetry honoring Allen
Ginsberg's contribution to American literature. The winning
poems and all honorable mention winners as well as editor's
choice poems will be published in "The Paterson Literary

Jerome Foundation.
Supports exhibitions, fellowships, production grants, and
workshops for emerging artists in: arts criticism, dance,
film/video, media arts, literature, music,
theater/performance art, visual arts, and multi-disciplinary
work. Individuals may apply for the New York City Media Arts
production grants. Otherwise, the Foundation prefers to fund
organizations which offer stipends to artists for their
participation, and which provide documentation and analysis

Land of Odds (Nashville, TN). EIGHTH ANNUAL UGLY NECKLACE
CONTEST -
A jewelry design competition judged on the hideousness of
the necklace and how well the artist has shown an
understanding of good design principles (and how to violate
them) to achieve this "Ugly" end, and the quality of the
accompanying poem. The top ten semi-finalists’ pieces will
be displayed from May-September. First prize of a $992.93
shopping spree on the Land of Odds web-site and a Runner-Up
prize of a $399.07 web-site shopping spree. Deadline: March
15.
National Endowment for the Arts. CREATIVITY
For the creation and refinement, and presentation of
artistic work, as well as artistic training programs. Funds
may support commissions, residencies, rehearsals, workshops,
collaborations with artists from other countries,
exhibition, or publication of artistic works of all cultures
and periods (literature projects must focus on contemporary
writers). Applications must be made through an institution.

Institutional Grants
The Robert Mapplethorpe
Foundation. PHOTOGRAPHY
Supports museums and other public institutions by assisting
in the creation or expansion of photography departments:
emphasis is on permanence, that is, the acquisition of
photographs or the support for study and exhibition
facilities. Support is also available for important
exhibitions which ideally will be accompanied by quality
catalogues, books, or other documents to insure their place
as reference resources for the future documentation of
photography as a fine art. Award: Varies. Deadline: Open.

Most grant awards range from $5,000 to $100,000, and all
require a match of at least 1 to 1.

• SERVICES TO ARTS ORGANIZATIONS AND ARTISTS – For local
arts agencies, service organizations, and others whose
primary purpose is to assist organizations or artists in
administrative, developmental, technical, and related areas.
Projects may include workshops, conferences, or publications
that provide professional development, networks, and other
services to arts organizations or artists, training and
professional development in arts administration, the
development of new or adaptation of existing technology to
improve the operation of arts organizations’ impact, or to
enhance the experience of audience members with special
needs. Award: $5,000 - $150,000. Deadline: March 12, August

• CHALLENGE AMERICA: REACHING EVERY COMMUNITY FAST-TRACK
REVIEW GRANTS -
Offers support primarily to small and mid-sized
organizations for projects that extend the reach of the arts
to underserved populations, those whose opportunities to
experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity,
economics, or disability. Award: $10,000. Deadline: May 28.

The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc.
Awards grants on a project basis to curatorial programs to
assist in the innovative and scholarly presentation of
contemporary visual arts. Projects may include exhibitions,
catalogues and other organizational activities. The work of
choreographers and performing artists is occasionally funded
when the visual arts are an inherent element of a
production. Awards: $5,000 - $50,000. All Deadlines:
March 1, September 1.
• THE WYNN KRAMARSKY FREEDOM OF ARTISTIC EXPRESSION AWARD
-
Supports efforts to strengthen freedom of artistic
expression and equitable access to resources and recognizes
the work of organizations with a deep-seated commitment to
preserving and defending the First Amendment rights of
artists. The grant rewards outstanding advocacy, legal, and
curatorial efforts on behalf of those whose rights to free
expression have been challenged.
• CURATORIAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS – Support scholarly
research to develop significant exhibitions.
Institutionally-affiliated curators at any stage of their
careers are eligible to apply. Research must be part of a
potential exhibition and curators must have the formal
support of their director. Grants to curators do not
preclude separate proposals from sponsoring institutions.
