FMM students share their Internship experiences

in their own words....

Alison Krawczyk

I currently intern with a public relations firm, called Regan Communications. When I started college last fall I did not expect to begin interning so early, but I was asked if I would be interested in PR. I have been working with this company since then.

I work with four women in a New York City office. Each day I go in, I log onto the computer and check my e-mail because that is typically, where I can find my projects for the day. My tasks usually include compiling media clips of their clients that include London Lennies Restaurant, Espace and Capitale event spaces, and Mohegan Sun Resort and Casino. I organize the media clip binders, help keep the office organized, make sure that the printer has ink, drop the outgoing mail in the mailbox. These small tasks may seem mundane but these responsibilities lead to larger projects such as compiling media contact lists, assisting in writing press releases, and calling different media contacts to explain the pitches. The most exciting part of my internship is attending the events. Occasionally, the publicists are required to attend important events. As an intern I would sit at a table toward the entrance and help check – in press guests. This is fun because you meet amazing people, try the delicious food, and even sometimes see celebrities.

I never thought I would be so interested in public relations. To be honest, I had no idea what that meant when I was offered the internship but now I am planning on changing my major to Advertising Marketing Communications in order to pursue a career related to the PR field. I think it is very interesting and exciting. You always need to be up to date on current events, and be well versed in whatever industry your client is in. The women I work with have all been so kind and helpful as well. If I do not know what they are asking for they are willing to explain, and they are always kind with their constructive criticism. I think this was a successful internship because I have learned so much about PR and about myself.

Since first founded in 1983 by George K. Regan Jr., Regan Communications has provided public relations services to corporations, non-profits, start-ups, individuals and causes, seeking the best messaging, strategies, and execution. At Regan, their mission is to achieve the client’s communication goals. From national corporations to local businesses, they operate with the sole objective to deliver the right message in the right way. Some of their clients include Dunkin’ Donuts, Boston Celtics, Mohegan Sun, New Balance, Filene’s Basement, and Todd English’s Olives. As an intern in the Public Relations Department, I perform many tasks to assist the company in obtaining daily success. For instance, I write creative press releases on information pertaining to individual cliental. Also, I develop and send out media kits to interested companies and organize our clients clip books. Most importantly, I communicate with clients on a daily basis about their desired goals, in order to keep them satisfied with our company’s actions. Overall, I have learned many skills which are a base to both the fashion and business industries. These are techniques I will carry with me from this point on and interject into my future projects.
