FMM Professors Participate in Mini Retreat

FIT's Critical Thinking Initiative Team hosted a mini retreat workshop, Separating Fact from Fiction on the Web, on Friday, October 16.  FMM Professors Renee Cooper, Nancy Kaplan, Maury Johnson, Joseph Antee, Sharon White and Janice Messinger attended.

After opening remarks, the group was addressed by Brian Fallon (Writing Center) on "Designing an Effective Research Assignment" and N.J. Wolfe and Helen Lane (Library) on "Thinking Critically about Research".

The presentations were followed by a hands-on workshop with lab exercises.  Participants were divided into groups and after examining specific sites on the web, they were challenged to evaluate the resources for accuracy, currency and objectivity.

FMM Professor and Graduate

Attend JDA Seminar

In September, Professor Naomi Gross attended a seminar hosted by JDA and led by Bill Pattberg at PVH. Bill Pattberg is the Director of Retail IT for Van Heusen, Bass, Izod, and Calvin Klein Retail stores. Susan Reda, Executive Editor for Stores Magazine closed out the morning speaking about general market conditions.

Joining Naomi were several planning executives from Brooks Brother's including an FMM graduate, Kate Fusco.  Other retailers represented included J.Crew, Liz Claiborne, Kenneth Cole, Urban Brands, and Modell’s.

Kate Fusco (FMM Graduate) on the left

Wayne Usie from JDA introduced the morning session. He shared insight from his exposure to the many companies he works with: retailers are moving toward market driven assortments, strengthening the pull method of inventory management. To that end, Bill Pattberg shared PVH’s size scaling process that builds assortments and allocations based on historical results. This provides better alignment with customer needs.

The topic was “size scaling” and covered an add-on technology to JDA Allocation. PVH uses Allocation for both replenishment and fashion allocation.

Result: PVH/Van Heusen experienced a lift in Gross Margin, a decrease in inventory, an increase in sales and an improvement in Service Level.

FMM Assistant Professor Published

Joseph Antee, Assistant Professor in FMM, has published a third article

in FASHION MANUSCRIPT; this article is in the May 2009 edition.  Professor

Antee’s article focuses on consulting for fashion companies from a global

perspective, specifically Europe.  Since January 2007 Professor Antee has

consulted for a fashion retailer in Spain, currently serving as a member of

the Board of Directors.  The article highlights differences between

merchandising practices in the USA and abroad.

FMM Professor Wins Award

for Excellence in Teaching

Nancy Sheridan is the recipient of a Chancellor's Award for Excellence

in Teaching from the State University of new York.  Nancy, an assistant

professor of FMM, received the award at FIT's commencement

ceremonies at Radio City Music Hall on May 19.

The Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching is presented for

extraordinary professional achievement.  The primary criterion is teaching

skill, but scholarship, professional growth, and assistance to students are

additional selection factors.

Professor Sheridan has taken a leadership role in curriculum

development.  She revised the International FMM curriculum for FIT's

school in Florence to meet the needs of foreign students, resulting in a

doubling of enrollment figures over the previous semester.  She created

and conducted a graduate-level course in Team Development and

Negotiating Skills at the Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok.  In 2008,

Professor Sheridan was selected by FIT to teach a class in Retail

Merchandising at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton Business

School.

Her other contributions to FIT include serving as International

Coordinator to work with faculty and advise students at FIT schools

abroad.  She is a member and past chair of the search committee for

new faculty.
