Are you applying for transfer credit?

Students often contact the English and Speech Department about transferring courses they have taken at other colleges. However, transfer credit is neither approved nor granted by academic departments at FIT.

If you are interested in applying for transfer credit, you must first contact the FIT Office of the Registrar. Only the Registrar can officially grant students transfer credit.

If the Registrar is not certain that a course you took is equivalent to an FIT English or Speech course, they may ask you to contact the English and Speech Department. You will then need to meet with the Chair or Assistant Chair of the department and ask them to review your materials. Based on documentation you provide, they will decide whether or not to advise the Registrar to accept the course for transfer credit.

In order to make their decision, the Chair or Assistant Chair will need to see a detailed course description; a syllabus or course outline may also be required. You should also indicate the number and title of the FIT English or Speech course for which you wish to receive credit. If the Chair or Assistant Chair determines that the course you have taken is equivalent, you will receive a memo, which you then must take to the Registrar so they can process your transfer credit request.

If you would like to meet with the Chair or Assistant Chair, we recommend that you make an appointment in advance. Please contact the Administrative Secretary for more information. In some cases, this process may be conducted by email.

To repeat: The English and Speech Department does not “approve” courses for transfer credit. We merely determine whether or not a course is equivalent to one of the courses we offer, and make a recommendation to the Registrar. Your first step is always to contact the Registrar.
