What
students are saying about online courses...
Do you think an online class
is more work than a "face to face" class?
"For those who are used to doing their own work and going the
extra mile to make sure they understand the material on their own,
this class is not more work then a normal class in a classroom.
For those who are used to skating by with using other's ideas,
this class would be much more work for them."
"No, I think the amount of work is about the same. With an
online course, you set your own classroom schedule whether it is
before work or bed. One needs just to be prepared to check in
everyday in order to keep up." |

What special skills do you think you need to
be successful in an online class?
"The one skill you must have to take an online course is "Discipline."
There is no one here to nag you or talk to you if you don't show up in
class or do the work, so if you're not willing to learn you won't
learn anything."
"I think that you need diligence, motivation, and patience. You have
to make sure that you will take time out of your schedule to do your
assignments and complete the course material that is presented."
What advice would you give someone considering
whether or not to take this (or any other course) online?
"Do not assume that it will be easier than a classroom class. However,
it is nice not to be tied to as specific of a schedule."
"I would tell them to not think its going to be a breeze, because its
not. Another thing I would say is, log on as much as you possibly can
instead of cramming all the work into one or two log on sessions."
Do you think you learned more or less by taking
this class online instead of in the classroom?
"I will admit to expecting that an online course would be a breeze,
needing only the occasional sign-in. However, what I learned is that
this is equally as serious as a classroom class, and as a result I
certainly learned a great deal. The opportunity to sign-on and post my
thoughts, as opposed to waiting for my turn in class, was a refreshing
change."
"In one perspective I actually learned more in this online classroom!
Although it may sound silly I sometimes feel rather shy in class and I
sometimes find myself not asking as many questions as I probably
should. With taking an online course I was just a name over the
internet and it made me realize that the questions I had to ask
weren't stupid…I think this allowed me to have more confidence in
regards to discussions, something I can apply to any classroom!!"
Do you feel like you had access to the
instructor just as much as in a "face to face" class?
"I actually find it easier to ask a teacher online then in a classroom
because sometimes you can feel self conscious, and in turn not ask. In
an online course, I do not feel as shy or self conscious."
"Yes I did, not only did I get very quick responses, but I was even
more comfortable asking any questions I had. I actually felt I had
more access than a regular classroom because in a class its hard when
a teacher walks right in and starts the class, and you're unable to
talk to them, and if you wait till after class you feel like your
keeping them."
What did you like best about your online course?
"The best thing that I liked about this course was getting all the
different perspectives and opinions of the other students. I think
that is a big thing that we lack in a physical classroom, whether it's
due to the students being too quiet and shy or them being overlooked."
"The opportunity to hear everyone's thoughts, as opposed to sitting in
the back of the room not saying anything all semester."
