Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get my degree entirely online?
At this time FIT does not offer a degree exclusively online.

I've never taken an online course before. How does it work?

In an online course the instructor and students are connected to each other through the Internet. Using the Internet, you can receive instruction, compose and submit assignments, ask questions of the instructor and other students, discuss issues and actively participate in the class from your home, your office, or the nearest campus computer lab.

Who can take the class?
Courses are available to everyone, both degree students and students who simply want to take courses for professional development (non-degree students). Online courses are also open to international students.

Do I have to log on to the course at one particular time or place?
No, the great advantage of an online course is that you can do your work at any time of the day from any place that you can access the Internet.

Are the courses self-paced?
The courses are not self-paced. They follow the same semester schedule as other courses offered at FIT and have regular due dates, assignments, and exams.

Do I have to be an experienced Internet/computer user to take online courses at FIT?

Although you do not have to be an expert, you must have basic computer skills such as word processing, using the Internet, checking email, and sending attachments.

Is there technical help available throughout the semester?

Yes. The SUNY Learning Network Help Desk is available to answer your technical questions. Students can contact the SLN Help Desk at 1.800.875.6269 (press 2) or by e-mail at helpdesk@sln.suny.edu

I've gone to the Angel website, but my user name and password are not working.
Please contact the IT department at 212.217.HELP.

      How much work is involved?
Online courses require the same amount of work as classroom courses. During the fall and Spring semesters, the rule-of-thumb for campus and online courses is that each credit hour requires 3-4 hours of work per week. So a 3-credit course would require 9-12 hours of work per week for the semester. During the Summer and Winter semesters, expect to spend 4-6 hours a day working on your course.

Will I still feel connected to the teacher and my classmates even though we are online?
Most students who take online courses actually report feeling more connected to their professors and their classmates.

What equipment do I need to take an online course?
Your computer should have the minimum equivalent of a Pentium II processor with Windows 95 or higher operating system, or a Macintosh G3 processor with System 8 or higher operating system. The computer should also have at least 32 MB RAM and a 56K baud modem. You will also need:

An Internet connection to the World Wide Web.
Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 and higher or Mozilla Firefox as your web browser. If you are using an older version of Internet Explorer, you need to upgrade your browser software. Although you can use Netscape versions 4.7x or 6.2 and higher web browser to access our site, we are recommending that students use the Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox web browser.
A word processing application that has the capability to save files in the Microsoft Word or RTF file format.
Some courses may have additional requirements, such as access to a scanner or digital camera.  Please call the department offering the course for more information (contact numbers can be found on the FIT home page).

I don't see my question here.
