These courses focus on the design and construction of clothes.


Fashion designers create clothing for every occasion and lifestyle. Explore a career as a fashion designer, assistant designer, stylist, or fashion executive.

Fashion Design Techniques-

Learn to design clothing and make patterns for your designs by draping and shaping muslin on a dress form. You'll learn basic skills, as well as creative variations on several bodices and skirts.


HAP 025 (For students attending 9th or 10th)
Sewing for Fashion Designers-

You'll learn the basics of sewing on an industrial machine, how to make several different seams, seam finishes and hems, and how to lay out and cut a pattern. Projects include an apron, a skirt or shorts, and other basic sewing projects.

Sewing for Fashion Designers

You'll learn the basics of sewing on an industrial machine, how to make several different seams, seam finishes and hems, and how to lay out and cut a pattern. Projects include an apron, a skirt, pajama pants, a peasant top, and a blouse.

Introduction to the Fashion Design Industry-

What does a fashion designer do everyday? This course teaches you how the fashion business works and includes field trips to museums, stores, and fabric sources. Presentation boards will also be created in class requiring basic fashion art skills.

Intermediate Sewing and Embroidery Design-

*Prerequisite: HAP 026 or HAP 025
Improve your expertise by sewing advanced projects using a variety of machines. You'll create and execute your own embroidery designs, using machine and hand embroidery to decorate your designs. Projects include an embroidered T-shirt and jean jacket.

*To waive the prerequisite for course HAP 153 you need to submit a fax (212.217.7964), or an e-mail (precollegeprograms@fitnyc.edu) to the Precollege office, stating that you have the skills necessary for this advanced class, please make sure to include your full name and the date of birth. The abilities would include: sewing a perfectly straight hem, zipper, and familiarity with an industrial sewing machine.
