Manuscript of Nature V is an ongoing installation that Cui Fei began in 2002. Vine tendrils, pinned to the wall in vertical rows, simultaneously evoke Chinese calligraphy and the infinite variety of nature. This orderly arrangement is part of Cui’s search for what she calls the underlying essence of our lives, something that is real and permanent, which cannot be altered by social, political, cultural, or geographic conditions.
Cui Fei was born in China and received her undergraduate painting degree from Zhejiang Art Academy. After coming to the United States in 1998, she earned her MFA at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She has exhibited in New York at The Queens Museum of Art, Chelsea Art Museum, Ethan Cohen Gallery, gallery 456, and Wave Hill. Cui lives and works in New York.
