Following years of wild expansion and commercial vitality, the last six months in the art world - as in all business sectors - have seen rocky auction and art fair sales, abrupt gallery closures and publicly expressed dealer woe. This discussion will assess the current state of the art market and the long-term picture for the industry.

Moderator:
Sheri L. Pasquarella
is a New York based contemporary art advisor and consultant. Prior to establishing SLP Art Culture Commerce, she worked as a commercial art dealer for Gorney Bravin + Lee and Marlborough Gallery.  In 1995, Ms. Pasquarella conceived and co-founded the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA), a not-for-profit organization that promotes the understanding of contemporary art and has a fair each year in Miami.  She was also the founding arts editor of Tar magazine, where she still actively contributes.  Ms. Pasquarella works as a curator and lecturer and is currently on the faculty of the Art Market Master’s degree program at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Panelists:
Yvonne Garcia
is the Director of Development at The Bronx Museum of the Arts. She has over 15 years of experience working with highly regarded private and public art organizations.  She has raised funds for museums and art centers including The Drawing Center, Art in General, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center.  Ms. Garcia has also managed public relations accounts for internationally renowned galleries, auction houses, architecture firms, biennales and art fairs.

Florence Lynch established the Florence Lynch Gallery in 1998.  She was the former director of the Salvatore Ala Gallery in New York, and has worked as an independent curator, critic, and lecturer. In addition to co-directing the gallery, Ms. Lynch has completed numerous curatorial projects in commercial and non-profit spaces both nationally and internationally.

Paul Morris began his career as an art dealer working at Hirschl and Adler Modern in New York, later moving to became director of Anthony d’Offay Gallery in London.  Upon returning to New York, he became a private dealer and art advisor and opened one of the first galleries in Chelsea.  Morris also founded The Gramercy International Contemporary Art Fair, which eventually became The Armory Show.  After the fair became part of the Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc., Morris was named Vice President of Art Properties for the company. He currently oversees six international fairs including The Armory Show, VOLTA (Basel), VOLTA NY, Next, Art Toronto and Art Chicago.

Lowell Pettit is the founder and director of Lowell Pettit Art Advisory LLC.  Over the last 15 years, Mr. Pettit has worked for several galleries, dealers, and collectors both in the US and abroad.  He has lectured for many major museums and educational programs including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, NYU, Christie’s and Sotheby’s Institute of Art, where he has served on the faculty since 2001. He has also been featured in a number of publications including the New York Times, Fortune, Forbes and The International Art Newspaper.

Walter Robinson is the founding editor of Artnet Magazine.  As an art critic and writer, he has worked on numerous publications such as the independent art magazine Art-Rite, the East Village Eye and Art in America. In addition to being an accomplished author, Mr. Robinson is a well-respected artist and a member of the New York City artist group, Collaborative Projects.
